    Jessops resurrected

Noon today, according to http://www.jessops.com/, with prices in the shops at about the same as on-line and a 'click-and-collect' service.
All of this is according to Peter Jones.

Could be useful for me as I need big, well-spaced buttons (on a small cell-phone I can press almost the entire keypad with one thumb - and I have ten of them!).

    Re: Jessops resurrected

It will be interesting to see if he is able to make it a good going concern!

I saw an interview with him on the news this morning, he did vocalise the problem that Dixons Group also face, people go in store, look at it, go home to have a think, and buy it cheaper on amazon.

Switching it over to being more of a services company isn't a bad idea. In the same way people bought the stupid insurance DG used to try and force down your throat at every oppertunity, I could really see people buying some lessons when buying the camear.

We've all seen people who have bought £500 camera and kit lens, but don't really understand anything. Even explaining the 3 variables for a cost of £45 for a private one hour lesson would be a good idea. Because they can get creative with this model.

Queue My un-informed predictions based on what I'd do!

Camera is same price as Amazon.

Lesson plan including 1 hour tutition in store that day £100. But also includes 5 more group classes held in the store on differen't evenings, things like Portrait, Landscape, Street, Digital Re-touching. They have the ability with lessons to make people really appreciate the effect glass has, and get more conversions there too. All photographers know from internet forums that your only as good as the kit you have, so buy, buy, buy! (it is sad, but true many people think that way, if you've not got £3k of camera, your no 'pro', imagine if programmers thought if you've not got £10k of computers, your not 'pro'!)

But its half price! That means you get save money buying with us.

If they do this well, they could really be on to something. A friend I used to work with had pictures of their late mother they wanted a quick touch up too before the funural, despite having a 7D, kit lens and popflash; a truely terrible combination for the money, they had never used lightroom or similar. A quick change on exposure, lens profile, eye correction and they had something ready to print on superA3.

There is definately a market for that, and I wish him well in his gamble, he certainly has got more balls than I!

Teaching people how to use cameras might be a good idea generally,
but not business wise if if stops them buying more expensive kit from you...

That's a problem all shopping centre retail stores face nowadays and a reason many are shutting
    - the only real advantage they can use is persuading the customer to buy more/ higher priced items while in the shop.

Not if you've got a relationship with the client.

In effect the salesperson beacomes more a teacher, a tutor, someone to look up too. I would imagine in many places it would be profitable to have a £10 per head, group lesson every evening. You'd only need 3 or 4 people to be in the black for it. You'd also be relying on selling the package with the camera as a USP. You can happily charge them only £5 per lesson, selling a block of 10, safe in the knowledge that most customers won't make them! (think rebate sales models).

So if the teacher is paying for itself, it becomes the sales as the value add. I think that is a much more sustainable model myself as online schooling and courses people just don't appear to take too. Not to mention beginers with cameras need ot learn how to hold them half the time!

This creates a natural ability to show the consumer things they wouldn't have considered before, but in a personal way, if your cheating a human who your on a first name basis with by going to amazon or whatever, your going to feel bad about it.

Even more so if they discount the high margin 'Education', against the low margin photographic item. Who cares if its £1 cheaper on amazon, you just got another class for FREE!

I wonder how happy Canon/Nkion will be to resupply them after they were owed £46 million:
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...ss-of-80m.html

and Peter Jones has paid £2million and not exposed to any of that debt.
