Me too
Well I *WANT* a D800 ... but this will do for now!
Don't count your chickens.

With so many elements, I'm guessing this will cost a lot, an awful lot.

pricing announced $799 or £799..

Wow, boy did I call that one wrong.
That is a very reasonable price considering. Are we going to see first party manufacturers shaken up by this a little bit? I think before they have rested on their lorals a bit with the high end lenses, because there wasn't any competition other than changing system.
Will be waiting for reviews of this with egarness, sadly for now its only on Canon mount.

Canon and Sigma mount first, with Nikon, Pentax and Sony later in the year apparently.
I'm very interested in this. But it also makes me think (or hope) this signals some other new lenses from Sigma, especially if this is indication of their pricing model for other lenses.
Yes well obviously it's because Canon are in need of a good quality lens at a low price point
Trolling asside, they have a competition here that maybe some hexus users would be interested in:

Have you had any hands on, or just taking a plunge?
I know SRS have it in Canon format in stock, but I haven't seen any full reviews online yet. I'm guessing your buying it for the same uses I would, a nice wide angle, that can also do portrait work. Myself I'd really like to see the bokeh / CA / Vin tendency for that, because ultimately, its going to be all about shooting it fully wide.

looking through the gallery was enough for me to know that i needed it in my arsenal..
i've been looking at ditching my Tamron 17-50 2.8 for a while now, it's got beyond 'economical repair (and i don't think i would ever trust the guys at Intro 2020 again!) so have been looking at going with the Sigma 18-50 2.8, but when this was announced i held off..
also having this lens means that i don't have to look at buying a 24 1.8 and depending on tests i can sell my 28 1.8.. and i don't think there's a 18mm 1.8 on the market..

Did thread did make me pause as the is very much unique. Had this lens started at 16mm (would trade 1/3rd a stop for it), I probably would've passed up on my recent purchase of the Sony 16-50 2.8 and waited for it's release on the A-mount. For portrait, I don't think that I need a lens that goes particularly wide (though I am sure you can do something neat with it). For landscape photography, I usually have a tripod anyway (and a Sigma 8-16mm). I find that I tend to shoot fully wide or only slightly zoomed in with my talk around lens (18-270mm). So I reckon that 16mm would end up used if I had the option. 35mm might well be sufficient, but I guess that I will find out as I spend more time with my 16-50. Besides, I like the fact that the 16-50 is weather sealed and quite a bit lighter, which is handy when I am hiking mountains (two complementary hobbies if not for the fact that cameras do not like water, and camera equipment add a lot of weight).
If I was to get this lens, it will mainly be for taking group photos especially in darker places where tripods are not allowed. But I think that a prime might me fine for that.
Might sound like I am making an excuse after making a decision to buy something else.. but not saying that I am not at all interested in this lens. I am hoping that by the time I upgrade my body (which hopefully won't be too soon), other manufacturers will have joined in making faster short-zoom and I will have a bit more choice. And perhaps as I learn, I will discover things that can only be done with this lens (that holds my interest) and I might change my mind
