Haida 10 Stop ND Filter

My new Haida 10 Stop filter arrived today, and I have just been out to test it out. What a cracking filter for £15!

I ordered yesterday lunch time and it arrived today. Very quick delivery from Premier Ink and Photographic!

Anyway, just been out with it for a very brief test (literally had about 5 mins, so not perfect by a long shot), and here is the result:

The image above is straight from the camera, no PP in lightroom at all.

That was taken at about 5pm, in bright sunlight, with the shutter open for 4 seconds! Unfortunately there is virtually no wind and the tide was out so not much motion in the clouds or the sea, but the exposure is pretty good considering the time of day!

My Opinion: Excellent for the price (52mm only £14.99 and free delivery with a discount code), but in future I think I will line the shot up before attaching the filter

Is that how people get the water effects in pictures of waterfalls, fast flowing rivers, water over rocks etc, where the water looks like it has been altered in Photoshop or something?

ND filters are fun, I picked up an entire set of Cokin stuff for about £5 on ebay, 8 filters, some not ND, but I've had fun with them.

Which was in terrible bright white light, the kind of day when the sun hasn't burnt through the humidity, I used 4 filters chained together, to get a 1/4sec exposure at f22.

So I decided I needed, obviously needed a good ND filter. So I bought one and have failed to do anything with it

Check out kushtibari's stuff, he is probably my favourite poster on hexus for his photos, I'm a sucker for landscapes and long exposure work.

I know what you mean, I went out again last night (about 8:30pm, by the time I got set up) and must have taken about 50-60 shots, and only managed to get 1 that I was satisfied with (and even that wasnt great). However, while I was down there I got alking to another tog, and he was using a Cokin ND Grad Filter and had got same great shots. (Here is a link to his flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanhal...in/photostream - He likes to add a touch of HDR so may not be your thing, but you can still get an idea of what the filter has done to the shots)

To be honest I think I had 2 main issues. Firstly, I was out at 5pm, in bright sunshine, then again at 8:30pm in almost darkness. I think I need to get out somewhere in the middle to ge the best light for the 10 stopper. I found the earlier ones were too over exposed and the later ones too under exposed.
Secondly, I lack in skills and probs just need to get out with it more and practice. I made silly mistakes such as putting the Filter on, and then trying to let the camera auto-focus, which it obviously couldnt do in complete darkness... (Is it best to be in manual focus, without the filer on, focus it manually, then screw the filter on?)

Cheers David, really appreciated. It took a while to get it right, must have been down there for a good hour or so, but was worth the wait. Also, when I was taking the shot, I didn't even realise the ship way out on the horizon. Think it adds a little something to it though.
