Re: Photoshop and Creative Suite to be permanently subscription based

For very many years I did all my own darkroom processing - colour and black & white - and loved it. I then started with image manipulation using Corel products (from version 3 onwards) and loved it. In 2007 I got Photoshop CS3 and really, really loved it but I regrettably I cannot afford the full price of the subscription model. I am envious of the student rates (would much appreciate any advice Bobster).

I have a some high quality digital cameras but I am an amateur and I really love my hobby. It is such a great shame that camera manufacturers do not make comparable quality software available to their customers so we can really 'manage' our results.

...and this is where Corel could make a big return if they play it right. No one wants to use PS in the cloud. It's a very silly decision by Abode.

Sorry, I totally missed this post.

Elements 11 is on the table, but given the talk over the last few days, that might even be out for us. As I said in my last post, it's been a real eye opener. Most of the people don't need Photoshop, it was just easier to deploy it with a volume licence to all the machines.

Currently it looks like quite a lot of people here will be fine with Paint.net. Going to be underpowered for some, but for general image editing it appears to have way more features than it did a few years ago.

The kicker for us is the way it's going to apply to students. There is currently a lot of confusion over how this is going to be managed with the cloud.

It's a bit of a mess in all honesty.

The Creative Cloud package does not require an ongoing connection - only to download, validate and update. It works offline as the programmes are installed directly on your PC. I have been using it for almost a year and I really like it (admittedly I get student rates).

They could have picked a better naming system as this seems to be a modern misconception.

    From Adobe -

'Do I need ongoing Internet access to use my Creative Cloud desktop applications?

No. Your Creative Cloud desktop applications (such as Photoshop and Illustrator) are installed directly on your computer, so you won't need an ongoing Internet connection to use them on a daily basis.

You will need to be online when you install and license your software. If you have an annual membership, you'll be asked to connect to the web to validate your software licenses every 30 days. However, you'll be able to use products for 3 months (99 days) even if you're offline.'

I stand corrected, in that case they need to market that then don't they. A lot of people are under the impression that it's going to require a constant internet connection, and you'll have to use PS in the cloud.

Yep - it has caused a lot of people to get the wrong impression. I think part of their reasoning is that they are working on new cloud tools such as 'Anywhere' to allow for collaborative editing anywhere in the world. These will all be additional and optional functions rather than forcing people to work in the cloud but they need to do a better job of informing clients.
