I don\'t quite get the target audience.

Looking at the shape of some of the compact cameras,I think it is the same audience.
;)

For people that want the NEX-3N in the shape of an SLR?
Seems a bit backwards if you as me.
Re: Sony A3000 previews($400 APS-C interchangeable 20MP dSLR-like camera with HD vide
The shape is easier to hold if using longer lenses, but I see it as the "want a camera which looks like a dSLR" market. However, for around £300 it does seem a lot of camera IMHO.

I can\'t help but feel they have taken the worst of both worlds.
The pain of a mirrorless with the pain of a DSLR sized body! Gum and Nuts together at last

I didn't realise there was such a market :p
I would have thought there are two markets for upgraders from compacts
- the higher image quality and interchangeable lens, but in a compact-like package served by the Nex, m4/3rds etc. ranges.
- the more control, fast AF/optical viewfinder users, served by entry level DSLRs
To move up to a DSLR sized body *without* gaining much in the way of extra control, and not gaining a phase detect AF or optical viewfinder, seems odd to me, but maybe they've identified a potential new market that I don't know about.

Add to your list - people who want a DSLR, see a "DSLR", but haven't the slightest clue what it is.
Those who have no more than £250 to spend, want a great big brand camera strap around their neck and refuse to shoot in anything other than auto.
This makes up about 80% of the people I've tried to recommend cameras to.

But this isn't a DSLR.

Clearly, this camera won't appeal to you as it will do to the "intended market" ;)
