Canon lens problem

Hi all.

Just today i have noticed that my camera (canon 550d) and lens(canon 100mm 2.8) are not working properly.

I was taking pictures of something at f19 with a ring flash as i do normally but things were coming out massively overexposed.

I then experimened with no flash and it seems like at large apertures (f2.8ish) the pictures are exposing correctly, but then as i make the apertures smaller, the pictures are coming very overexposed.

I thought this was a fault with my camera at first, so tried a different lens, which worked perfectly, so i think it must be the lens that is at fault.

I have googled various things, and i think it may be a 'sticky aperture'?

I would be so grateful for any advice or how or where this can be fixed.

Can you use Live view to check for a sticky aperture?

If it is, then it's repair back to canon job. They should have a decent warranty on the lens?

I take it you've done the usual clean of the contacts? An india rubber on the gold looking bits, being careful not to let it flake anywhere important.

yup tried the cleaning unfortunately

How does one get in contact with canon, and how does one check if its warranty? Was purchased on ebay a couple of years back...

shooting in the dark with AE? - try setting to manual at 1/200

Canon have a repair facility in the UK. I returned my 5D to them for a free out-of-warranty repair (mirror unglued itself - a batch fault it seems.) My camera was second hand and was about 5 years old when repaired, Canon support seems pretty good.

It took less than ten days to turn round - the cost would have been £80 iirc.

Worth giving the repair centre a call to discuss it with them, they may give you a quote over the phone.

Also i'm quite often getting a
"Err 01 Communications between the camera and lens is faulty" screen

with the lens on the camera, set it to f/8 press your DoF preview button and while still holding the DoF button, take the lens off the camera

now look at through the lens, can you see the aperture blades? if not, you def have a faulty lens and need to send it to be repaired (my 70-200 just did the same and has been sent away for repairs)

and looks like you'll have to pay to have it repaired, because unlike other lens manufacturers Canon only gives you 1 years worth of warranty with their lenses

Sent it to colchester camera repair service.
Think it probably is an aperture problem.
Will report back when i found out what it is, but i think cost will be ~£170ish

mine's a fixed tariff fee of 131 though Sigma..

Must say, i'm a little disappointed with Canon. I would have assumed that if a lens is purchased, there would have been more than a 1 year warranty..

How old is the lens, and who did you buy it from? You might be able to argue that it was a production defect.

I had a problem with the autofocus in a DA* Pentax lens going 'slow', Pentax said they'd take a look, despite it been 2 years out of warranty, however they quickly concluded that due to finding signs of rust around areas that water had expanded in (ie Ice!) it was abuse, and billed me £150, and took weeks to turn it around. I guess that cycling trip in Iceland I hadn't taken enough care of it.

Originally they said they were going to bill me just to inspect it, as it was out of warranty, but a little bit of politeness and they changed their mind. Onkyo are (hopefully) doing something similar for me right now. So it is certainly worth asking if you aren't in a big hurry.
