New Canon DSLR - Since my old EOS20D...

Hi guys...

We arrived in Singapore on 22nd Dec... same morning I headed to my usual haunt - Funan "Digital" Mall. Everything and anything tech is available there. It's pretty much a 'Toys R Us' for 32 year olds such as myself

My first DSLR kit was an EOS20D + 24-70mm f/2.8 L (v1) + 70-200mm f/2.8 L. However, I parted off with these way back and went with a much lighter Lumix LX3.

I got to spend sometime with my cousins 600D on a couple occasions, and found the lighter body to be a plus (mag-alloy isn't a serious need as I'm rather careful) and I find the twistable-touch LCD to be quite useful.

As most here are familiar with my hobbies, I shoot mostly small objects such as pens/watches etc. and the occasional YouTube review.

Having onboard Wifi was rather attractive, hence my picking up a 70D but this time going for a 24-105 mm f/4 L + 85mm f/1.8 prime (both kitted with Hoya HMC UV filters, primarily to protect the glass)
64gig 95MB/s ExtremePro Sandisk
Extra battery. A fantastic Camera bag was thrown in courtesy of Canon Singapore, so I didn't have to shell out for one. That green SD card was also free from Canon (16gig), which I've since gifted.





For Christmas Eve dinner I had a 7-course Japanese degustation menu with 5-Sake pairings. All shot with the 24-105 f/4 L

congrats - take the filters and throw them in the bin - protect the glass? pffff that's what the hood does..

seriously the abuse my lenses take and never had a filter on the front - my oldest lens 70-200 2.8 is fine and that has taken a serious pounding over the past 8 years..

UV filters are an utter waste of time in this day and age, take them off and use the lens properly. Seriously, what's it going to protect it from? An impact hard enough to damage the filter is just as likely to have damaged the internals so it would need to go away for repair anyway.

Way I see it, if you've got the cash to flash on top glass then you've got the cash to get them repaired/replaced if you can't look after them.

Thanks for the advice re. the filters. I was hoping they would protect from micro-scratches not any serious damage. How do you guys deal with these? Simply wipe off?

What are features and settings like on it? Some nice pictured - nice and clear and soft. Remind me of iPhones (but obviously better)

Haha... didn't realise one could control bokeh with iPhones...

Not the depth of field part, more the softness.

Some of the new smartphones have some really nice DOF adjustment though, noticeably the OPO

i'll take a photograph of the font element of my 70-200 later, you'll probably have a heart attack, but none of it has a visible effect on the images i take..

I ended up throwing away a UV filter, it was a cheap one, but it had become coated, absolutely caked, in 'gunky greese' that wouldn't shift. I didn't try any solvents mind, but the shammy wouldn't shift it either.

That was thanks to some photos in Mauritania, I didn't even like them. In the UK, I wouldn't worry, unless you are say, down by the beach, or sticking it outside of an airplane. My ex took a great shot of some surf in Bali, this covered the body in slightly salty water, again, having a UV for that is a good idea!

Ahh good point. Aye the softness was rather striking... something I didn't see with my 20D setup... I'm chalking it up to the ambience lol!
