I am saving a lot of scans to .pdf for my database. However, I suddenly got unsure if photo album software (which I will use later ... don't know which one yet) will accept pdf or if they need image formats like jpg. Grateful for response.

Depends on the software - one of things you will need to investigate when making your choice.
That said, there are applications that read PDF images (it is a very versatile format) so the likelihood is that most album software will be able to display them, however they may not be able to process them to price different sizes etc.
Peter, thank for a great answer. If worse comes to worse, I can probably batch-save my pdfs as jpgs.

PDF for photos? could end up in some horrible compression...

PDF stores images as JPG (generally) so don't worry about compression as you can set it to whatever you like.
That said, PDFs are focused on a page and will have a resolution to them. If you set them to say A4, you'll lose a lot of image information if you use the fairly common 300dpi resolution.
It's far better to store the JPGs and then convert them into a PDF if required.
it seems to me that it is better to save in jpg format. so you do not have to convert from pdf.
