what's it worth? Considering moving to Nikon

    Hi all,
    I've got the following gear:
    - Canon 350D
    - Canon 17-85mm IS USM
    - Canon 50mm MKII
    - Kingston 1GB & 2GB Elite Pro memory cards

All gear is in mint condition, around 1.5 years old, and has all instructions/boxes/leads

Reason for the sale? Well, i'm finding more and more than I would like a bigger LCD and bigger viewfinder - I find manual focus on the Canon a fiddle. The 30D is an option, but it doesn't really do anything for me above that of the 350D.

However, the Nikon D80 does tick the right boxes. I've not got enough investment in Canon that I'm particularly loyal to the brand. I could pick up the D80 with 18-70 or 18-135, get a 50mm, some SD cards, and be nicely set.

So, what's my gear worth, and has anyone else switched brands in the same way?

Yeah, you haven't got any thing particularly brand unique so no harm in switching. But equally, if you just want a bigger LCD and viewfinder then you don't need to switch purely for that.

Given the 350D came out in 2006 I'm amazed you bought it new as recently as 1.5 yrs ago, the actual camera is going to be nearer 10 years old.

You have a solid set of lenses,OP, and even though I am with Nikon and Fuji currently( I prefer them over Canon) I would invest in a newer Canon dSLR.

I would say look for a model with a pentaprism like a secondhand 60D or 70D or a newer model with liveview.

Unless I misread it, not quite what he said. He said mint condition and 1.5 years old, which could mean he bought 2nd hand, last week. That said, even so, it's an old camera.

Or possibly, a copy of an old post.

On the off-chance that it's genuine, OP, before doing anything drastic, get into a camera shop and try a full-sized body of the 30D or newer type. The 350 was famous for being small and, indeed, fiddly. The bigger camera bodies are not, and it'll avoid changing everything.

My brother did that (years ago) goung from 350 -> 40D, and the problem went away. Now, a couple of body changes later, he's full-frame Canon and has no more trouble, since the 350D, with "fiddly".

I just went through the details of Nikon D80 from here. To be honest, I don't think it a "must" deal but it's not a move either. It's worth considering. No doubt your photography experience will find a new taste. Hope you switch to something better in next 1.5 years.
