    Exclamation Digital SLR??

    Gaday all!
Im mulling over the option of buying a new camera, my budget is £350
My options are either a very good compact or a cheap SLR.
I love photography, so would enjoy the manuel aspects of a SLR, but again because of the budget my range of SLRs is small. Then again I could consider a "bridge" camera, ie something inbetween a compact and an SLR, a small SLR or a big compact if you like..

my favorite so far is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7, any opinions??

You should have posted in the Creative forum trashcanmonkey

For £350 i think you will be looking at a second hand dSLR. I think you can pick up a new Nikon D50 for about £450, but that for the body only, you needed at least one lens as well.

IF you want to see what is out there, go and grab a copy of Amature Photographer and look in the ads at the back. Loads of used camera retailers advertise.

EDIT: Correction, you can actually get a new D50 from warehouseexpress.com for £327 and with 18-55mm lens for £399

Can second the D50, it is an amazing camera. try ebay as a lot of camera shops advertise on there and you could prob get a d50 with an 18-55mm lens for about £350.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Been doing an heck of a lot of digging on this subject and pretty much all the feedback I have been getting points towards the Nikon D50, hell the latest isssue ofa mainstream mag reviews the D50 v the Canon 350D and actually makes theD50 the WINNER
Pixmania sell it for 375, my advice is go to your local Jessops and try both the cameras out, as long as the extra size is not a problem then I know what my money is on

i'd check out the top end 'superzoom' cameras - i got an is-s2 getting on for a year ago, and it has all the manual controls of a slr camera (manual focus, shutter/exposure/f-stop and so on). the pic quality wont be quite up there with the best, but its a fair whack smaller/lighter, does very good quality vids (didnt think i'd use it either, but i have occasionally) and image stabilization shibble (not sure if d-slr have that?) i'd say go for an slr if you're looking to change the lenses over.. otherwise a superzoom compact will do everything you want

There are a couple of dSLRs that have image stabilisation built into the body. Konika Minalta/Sony and Olympus spring to mind, but i could be wrong on that. With Canon and Nikon it is down to the lense to be IS or not. I recently bought a couple of IS lenses for my 350D, a 17-85mm and a 10-300. the longer one is on back order and haven't had time to play with te 17-85.
