Recommend me a camera

    Ok gents

    Me and the missus are off to Canada next month and we want to get a digital camera. Not looking to spend a fortune, a nice point and click job thats simple to use but can produce a 1/2 decent image would be great. I dont know the first thing about cameras and it seems that the boyz down Comet/Dixons dont either. Anyone got a recommendation for < £200?

    Are you sure you can't spend anymore? For £200 you will get a great camera but for a bit more you might be able to get a nice budget SLR.

    I'd recommend the Canon Ixus 60, £174 at Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...teway&v=glance

    PCPro Magazine have it on their A List for digital compact cameras (before that it was the Ixus 55, which I have and can highly recommend!)

    Thanks guys;

    Nick - she doesnt really want a fully featured camera, just a point and click job that can produce the best picture as possible with a compact. I'd like an SLR though

    Timread - nice one guv, I've been poking about the internet after reading your post and indeed the Ixus 60 seems to be well received. I think thats the one for her!

    BTW - does it really matter if you buy cheap storage for these cameras? I see a lot of cheap SD cards on EBay and wondering if they would be ok for a camera?

    My 1GB Sandisk II cost just over £20 from Amazon, at that price for the 'real thing' is it worth the (admittedly slight) risk of finding your pictures are corrupt when you get home?

    the fuji f11's can be had now for around £150. Also seemed to have received quite good feedback around and about? You should be fine with most of the current stock from good brands. I have an old sony 3mp (DSC-P8) that can produce good enough shots for 15"x10" prints if the light is good. 8" or 9" by 6" usually come out very well too. For me the fuji cameras look nice due to the good high sensitivity modes. My indoor and poorly lit shots often have quite a bit of noise when you look closely on the pc...

    Would recomend the panasonic lumix FZ7, for £230. The lense and zoom (up to 64X!) is the best bit, immense and its quite compact, and the lens (made by leica) is simply the best ive seen. Easy to use on simple mode too.

    About the flash cards - I'd recommend that you get cards that are rated at at least 40x, and preferably 60x or 133x. I'd go for Corsair or SanDisk.

    The no-name generic cards are usually unrated, and can be very slow. Not great when you're trying to capture a small video (the Ixus 55 and 60 support video clips), and need the transfer rate to be higher than when you're just taking single shots. You risk stuttering video!

    Scan have some amazingly cheap SD cards, for the capacity, here: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...Thumbnails=yes

    The Fuji F30 can be bought for around £210 if you look around. Failing that the F10 and F11 are bargains from around £140ish

    I'd personally have a look at the Canon Ixus 750, nice and compact, Great Image Quality, and superb colour reproduction, and can be had for £200
