RIP Seasonic, you served me well.

So after 12 years of non stop usage my faithful Seasonic psu finally popped its clogs and went up to heaven in a puff of smoke. Being the good chap he was he very kindly & discretely departed this world with a puff of smoke and nasty smell. No other damage to any other parts and I'll be sorry to see the old, reliable duffer go.

RIP Seasonic, you served me well.

Bit of first aid with a soldering iron and he might be good to go again!

Safety warning: but only if you know what you are doing - there are lethal voltages inside a psu

Yeah I know what I'm doing to a certain degree with regards to a soldering iron and PSU. It was late last night when I finished putting a new one in but I did have time to take a quick look under the hood of the Seasonic. After a quick hoover to remove the copious amounts of dust & fluff I couldn't actually see an obvious signs of damage. i.e. no obvious signs of scorching or burning. Judging by where the smell is worst though it would seem that something has gone around the power supply/fuse board. But until I get the heatsinks off and have a deeper root around I wont know for sure. And to be honest not sure I can be bothered or whether it would be worth it.

I would imagine that more modern PSUs have improved a lot since then, so probably not. Although I say that while having an ~8 year old PSU myself and not really being knowledgeable on the subject (perhaps someone else can chime in as to whether that is truly the case), I still believe that 12 years is long enough that it could actually be true.

That was kind of my thinking also if I was able to repair it, it would only be for sentimental reasons and just have another psu for backup and spares.

It was the first real quality & researched PSU I ever bought and set me on the correct path of not skimping on such a vital part of a PC. It's proved its worth and validated my belief that you should never look to save money in this area as it could cost you so much more in the medium to long term.

I'd just get rid of it personally, you can kill yourself or components if you get it wrong so 12 years of service is more than enough.

Re: RIP Seasonic, you served me well.

I got a Seasonic SS-620 for an early Christmas present from my wife, looking forward to having it for many years to come...

Merry Christmas and a (hopefully) Covid-Free New Year !!

And rest in peace seasonic, I'm sure you are still greatly missed
