    Entry level Laptop

    Hi,
my son is after a first/entry level laptop & wants to spend up to £400.
He wants: up to 15.5" screen > at least 1gb ram > 120 gb hdd > dvd r/w > wireless > card reader > prefers Pentium > vista > pre loaded with MS-Word & Excel & pos dvd prog.
Any recommendations out there please ?

Free delivery on these at the moment.
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

    AMD dual core
    2GB of RAM

If he's willing to spend a little extra then the true life screen is a must and a bigger batter 6/9 cell will be far better than the 4 cell.

Someone posted this one the other day. Very nice for the money.
    Asus X51RL-AP999 Laptop Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 120GB 2048MB DVD-RW WLAN ATI XPRESS X1100 128M Share VRAM 15.4" Vista Home Premium 2 year warranty - Ebuyer

By spending that little bit more in both case you get so much more.

Normally a £300 - £400 laptop is 512mb - 1gb of RAM, celeron processors etc.. which are quite frankly painful to use.

Dell Vostros do seem like very good bang for buck

True life screen just means shiny, not matt, right?

So they are charging for shiny screens these days?! I hate them.

Yup, dell Vostro - got Dad to get one for Mum (he had no idea what he was looking at), and for that money you can get AMD Dual Core, 2gb RAM, 120gb HDD, 1280x800 screen.

    Re: Entry level Laptop

    thanks for the replies:
He wants to stick to Pentium as his mate says it's best !!!! I think that as a newcomer he wouldn't know the difference. (He thinks my desktop is great,,,, but dosn't realise it's an AMD !)

We sent an e-mail to Pixmania last week about a similar ASUS, but so far no reply,,, but I don't know if they are known to be lax on pre-purchase replies, or if they are just busy.

I don't think a few quid either way would break him.
Also I have never opened a laptop, so am unsure of upgrading RAM / HDD later etc.

    thanks again
