    WTF?

So they are pretty much forcing you to have a 32bit OS with 4GB of RAM

    Way to go Dell!

Wow. It does sometimes surprise me how incompetent most computer manufacturers can be.

Re: What are Dell on about?

Quick semi-related question (because i can't be arsed to ring the monkeys at Dell and listen to their spiel)

Would a Dell OEM key work with retail 64bit media.

(in other words to get around their stupidness of only letting you have 64bit if you spend £80 more for another 2GB [although according to the site it is offered as a single 6GB stick , 4GB sticks are uncommon enough but 6GB?])

Reason i ask is that i want a laptop, more specifically the Vostro 3700, but obv i want a 64bit OS on it, i do have retail media, but i'm currently unsure whether a Dell OEM key will function with Retail kit

Or are Dell usefull in that they ship 64bit and 32bit media? (highly doubtful...)

If i can use the OEM key with retail media then it makes no odds to me as the system will be nuked as soon as i get it anyway to get rid of all of the bumf

Assuming we're talking about Windows 7 here, and provided it's the same version (HP, Professional or whatever) then yes, it will.

Re: What are Dell on about?

I think you just call Dell to give you a 64bit version once you get the computer. They just don't pre-install 64bit for you if you have less than 6GB of ram.

If you order over the phone you might be able to get the sales to override the limitation though.

    Too late

I've specced it up to 4GB and ordered online (don't like giving details over the phone...), i'll install using my retail version and the OEM key when it gets here

And if that doesn't work, then there are of course, ways and means..

    Cheers Guys
