Re: Will you upgrade this year.

My current PC is a Q6600 with 8GB RAM and. Radeon 6870.
For any current game I play (including BF3) its fine.
The problem is I need more than 8 GB RAM and a CPU that support RVI/EPT.

I plan to upgrade to an ivy bridge based system when available and 16/32GB RAM. That should see me for another 5-6 years.

Re: Will you upgrade this year.

Currently have an AMD 4800+ system with 2gb ram and a 4670 which has just blown up (ebay PSU).

Going to be purchasing a 2500k with 8gb ram tomorrow.

Gonna wait till nvidia show their hand before buying a graphics card.

Add that to the fact that most people massively overestimate the power requirements of modern PCs, and I think you actually have a couple of viable options.

A 6670 GDDR5 would be a massive upgrade over a HD3600 but is still bus powered: i.e. no extra power connectors required and will be absolutely fine with a 350W PSU. The 6670 is approaching 8800GT performance. However, you need to make sure you get a GDDR5 version - the GDDR3 will have much lower performance.

The other option would be to get a 6750 and a molex -> PCIe power adapter, but that could risk pushing your system close to its power limit (although it should be OK - my Q6600 + 8800GTX combination only pulled 320W from the wall under the heaviest load I could chuck at it, and the 8800GTX is more power hungry than a 6750!). It depends on how confident you are of the Dell PSU, but it's worth considering because the 6750 is a much faster card than the 6670 but only costs a few quid more...

Thanks good advice. Will try the card first and do the PSU if it turns out to be unstable. 6750 is like a 5750 which should be in the design margin

I did a minimal upgrade from a Q6600 to a AMD PII 955BE recently. Might switch to piledriver if its an good, if not il stick it out till next year and switch to intel.

Il reinforce the SSD upgrade option, absolutely love mine (also a force GT!

Re: Will you upgrade this year.

I just downgraded from an i7 setup to my current llano one thinking I'd get money and performance in games I play wouldn't be affected.

Although saying that, I'm having some performance issues in TF2 of all games, I can't believe llano can't cope with that? And it's certainly not my 560ti struggling :/

Upgraded to I7 920 @ 3.5GHz last summer and am now fitting it all into a Define R3 case. Might add another HDD or two near end of year.

Im tempted to upgrade atm, but If im to be honest with myself not sure if it all needed right now.

Still using Q6600 which seem to be doing fine, but what I am looking todo is get extra SSD drive and new monitor.

Re: Will you upgrade this year.

<-- Apart from my system posted there, I am also rocking P945 system with C2D E6550, 2GB RAM, Radeon HD5670 etc etc.

Tbh I can't, at present, see any real need to replace the mobo, cpu and ram with an i5, ddr3 and such. All the stuff I need to do is nice and responsive and I don't do much in the way of gaming anyway.
I would like to get an SSD in which would make the PC feel like a whole new system on it's own. Also perhaps upgrade the RAM to 4/8GB as I'm going to be working with VM's a lot. Would also like to stick the E6550 rig into a quieter case, but that's not a priority.

So, unless I come into a large mount of disposable cash, I'll be using the C2D's for a while longer yet.

Re: Will you upgrade this year.

The only thing I have on the horizon is a new graphic card when nVidia/AMD push out a new range toward the end of the year (unless I find something that actually doesn't run on my 580). CPU/memory wise perfectly happy and i've just added a couple of Samsung 830's in RAID0
If I had to go for a graphic card today i'd be looking at the 670 or 680 + a waterblock. Seems like the 670 is only fractionally slower anyway.

Re: Will you upgrade this year.

Still planning the new build, had some great input from the incomparable moose, but I did pick up a hotukdeals special on a Dell refurb for a friend, lovely little laptop, wishing I had bought one for myself even though I dont need one

Also picked up a Proliant Server, getting delivered in next couple of days, be nice to have something to learn on while I get on with college later in the year.

New build has been knocked back a couple months, want to start the course with a brand new build, so looking late July, early August, hopefully hard drive prices will have taken a tumble further down, although very tempted to grab an SSD at current prices.

I made the jump to Ivy Bridge earlier this month, I used these parts:

    Parts List:

    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) 1600Mhz

    PSU - Corsair AX850

Soundcard - Creative SB Fatal1ty Recon 3D Pro

    CPU Cooler - Corsair H100

    Case Fans - CoolerMaster 120mm SickleFlow x 3 and CoolerMaster 200mm MegaFlow x 1

Fan Controller – NZXT Sentry II

    Optical 1 – Pioneer Blu-ray writer

Optical 2 – Pioneer DVD writer

    OS – Windows 7 Home

    SSD 1 – 64GB Crucial M4

    SSD 2 – 256GB Crucial M4

    HDD – Seagate 2TB Barracuda 7200rpm

Extras – NZXT lighting kit, OZone Strike Keyboard, OZone XT Mouse Pad and Cyborg R.A.T 7 Mouse and I also have the Corsair Braided cable kit in Red on Pre-Order due June 1st.

There is no Soundcard in the photos because the Overclock Bundle has been causing constant BSOD so it went back to Scan before the Soundcard arrived. I'm hoping to get it back before the long bank holiday weekend but since its now Thursday I think my chances are slim to non and I go in for my operation at lunch time today so won't be in contact with them about it either
