    Ultrabook/Laptop + Externall HDD

    Hey guys,

Looking for a new laptop to go back to uni with. Looking for Ivybridge with ideally a 1080p screen, open to many options. SSD preferable, 256gb is possible, 128 is fine though.

Good battery life of 5 hours + would be nice.

Had pretty much decided on getting the ASUS Zenbook Prime UX32VD but can't find it in the UK --> what is the ETA if it is coming.

Will look at all the options before deciding on bang for buck.

Also be looking for a USB3 external drive (2TB ideally) to take with me the data from my desktop (all my pictures/documents etc as well as to use it for backup).

I think you're going to have to wait until they release the new batch of Ultrabooks properly. The Zenbook does look like a cracking piece of kit but we're still waiting for the release (thread here), and some competition. Lots of announcements about "world's thinnest" and "worlds lightest" but it's all vapourware at the minute.

    Re: Ultrabook/Laptop + Externall HDD

Still looking around but circumstances have changed slightly (now staying in the UK for uni rather than going abroad). So I will have my desktop (see left) which reduces the requirements of the laptop and removes the need for the external drive will look at getting a second large internal drive though when prices stabilise (something along the lines of the 2TB WD Blue/Green as it would just be for backup/extra storage). Still ideally would like 1080p screen (certainly want to avoid a 768p screen) and SSD but nothing much out there right now so I am going to hold off for a bit. Seen the Asus Prime UX31 for sale but its £1500+ which is slightly more than I was planning (~£1000 max ideally a little less).

Some of the Acers and Dell's seem good value on paper but not hit the shelves yet, seems the new Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks still haven't fully rolled out yet so I guess it is best still to wait.

    Re: Ultrabook/Laptop + Externall HDD

The Samsung ultras are really good value, and you can just slap a samsung 830 ssd in.

There is 100 pounds cash back on the samsung laptops and 20 on the ssds.

1080p on a ultrabook is dream world mate. 1366 x 768 is the general resolution on a 13" screen. I have a 15" retina macbook and if I use the 1920x1200 setting it really hurts my eyes and thats on a 15" screen.

Wow this thread was old.. sorry

    Re: Ultrabook/Laptop + Externall HDD

No worries, probably won't be getting the Zenbook anyway as it is really expensive (£1400+).

Been looking at the HP Envy 14" (1600*900), seems a good deal for around £1000.

Still looking for other options though and might just wait to see what comes around with Windows 8 (even if it is pretty horrible).
