    New Build GPU Advice!

Hey so i'm going to be builing a new gaming rig in a couple of weeks and i can't decide which gpu to go for out of these two,

ASUS GTX 650 Ti or ASUS HD 6850 DIRECT CU II

I'm gearing more towards the GTX 650 TI as it uses PCI-Express 3.0 and the 6850 is only 2.1 plus there is only a £5 difference in price.

    Specs will be:

    CPU: i5-3570K
    Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V
    Ram: GSkill 8GB Ripjaw X 1600Mhz DDR3
PSU: Antec TruePower 650W (Open to suggestions on a better Hybrid-Modular psu arround £60-70 atleast 600w, Dual 12v Rails @ 40amps and above)

Will mainly be used for gaming, i will be doing some overclocking on the cpu for benchies just to see what scores i can achieve etc, not too bothered about overclocking the gpu aslong as it doesn't run too hot an i get decent enough fps that i am able to run an intensive dx11 on medium @ settings720p/1080p res.

Open to suggestions on a better gpu than these two arround £120-130 budget max.

    Thanks

    Re: New Build GPU Advice!

The motherboard you want is £144:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...dvi-i-hdmi-atx

So with the graphics card and PSU you have around £320 to £330 in total to spend??

A fancier motherboard is not going to help you gain framerates in games, when the graphics card is still more important, followed by the CPU.

Remember a gaming build has two upgrade cycles - the CPU and GPU.

    I would get this motherboard:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigab...dvi-d-hdmi-atx

Put the £40 saved into the graphics card. I would get this:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-154-MS

It should come to around £155 including postage. If you don't like the games - sell the codes on Ebay as you may get £10 to £20 for them.

If you can spend more, get an HD7870 or a GTX660.

PSU is OTT unless you really are going Crossfire or SLI. A decent 500W to 550W PSU is more than enough for an IB Core i5 and a card like an HD7870 or a GTX660.

Thanks for the suggestion but i don't like gigabyte/MSI boards i'm definatly going with an asus as they have a better warranty and i've never had a problem with them plus i feel they're a better manufacturer and have better quality products.

That gpu looks like a beast if that offer is still on in 2 weeks(doubt it) i will get it if i can't i might dish out an extra £10-25 on the gpu, hopefully i could get a 7850 or an asus gtx 650 ti Direct CU ii if it's released by then and in my budget as the 660 is too much.

Want a 600-650w for headroom incase i decide to buy another gpu in the future for Crossfire/SLI or add extra HDD'S etc.

You can post links from any retailer as Hexus is not a shop retailer - only the Scan sub-forum would be an area not to post it.

The thing is that IMHO,the HD7850 2GB is probably what I would aim for at least as a minimum and the HD7850 2GB is meant to be decent for overclocking too. You are already spending a decent amount on other parts,so I would be looking at around £150 to £160 at least on the graphics card. In the end spending extra on the graphics card just makes more sense in the long run. A £100 motherboard would be than enough. If anything IB overclocking is more limited by cooling than the motherboard.

Regarding Gigabyte and Asus,I think they are around the same from experience, although TBH I probably have recommended more Asus motherboards for mates for some reason.

The 1GB version is pretty decent, but the 2GB version gives you some more leeway with future games. I have only used OcUK relatively recently, but remember they have been bought up by Case King,so are actually part of a very big European computer parts retailer.

Agree with cat - if you want to game, spend less on the mobo and CPU and spend more on the GFX card.

IMO have a look at the games you want to play and see how they perform in benchmarks; some games work better with NVidia cards, others with ATI cards.
Once you've figured out which manufacturer works out best for you, then it should be as simple as finding a card that meets your budget.

You can get a cooler master v650w for 50 quid from scan and a 750w for 60 quid on sale. Tier 2 psu. Just ordered mines just a few hours ago. Might help bring down the cost to buy something extra
