    First system build

So yeah this is going to be my first system build and was wondering what you guys think about these parts before I buy it. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I don't really want to spend more than £860, and I want to buy it all from Scan.

    LG GH24NS90 Disk Drive - £16.76

    Intel Core I5 3570k - £176.58

    Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo - £26.65

    1TB Western Digital Caviar Green - £59.96

    120GB Kingston HyperX 3K SSD - £79.34

    MSI Z77A-G45 - £76.52

8GB Corsair Vengeance Memory Low Profile - £33.36

XFX Radeon HD 7950 DD Black Edition - £239.75

Cooler Master 690 II Advanced Black & White Edition - £78.83

650W OCZ ZT Fully Modular PSU - £69.18

    Total Price - £856.93

    Re: First system build

Just a few things i'd suggest:
The disk drive you've selected is the retail version, but the OEM would be fine and save a couple of quid:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lg-gh...sata-black-oem
Or just get the cheapest Scan has, they're all basically the same feature-wise at this price:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/samsu...sata-black-oem

The WD Caviar Greens are their low-power models. I know you're getting an SSD, but you'd be better going for a standard speed 1TB drive as well, like:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-s...he-8ms-ncq-oem
Which is also ever so slightly cheaper.

The MSI motherboard's good, but i'd compare it to the Gigabyte D3H. Have a look at reviews, they're both good boards but Gigabytes of late have had pretty glittering verdicts.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigab...dvi-d-hdmi-atx

The graphics are good for the money, just be aware that XFX have a sketchy record for customer services and returns.

Does the PSU have to be modular? There are better power supplies in that price-range (Seasonic are generally the best built you can get, but they're often re-sold by other manufacturers - XFX, select Corsairs, Antec), and 650W is perhaps a little more power than you need, but just looking at that rating for now i'd suggest instead of the OCZ:
    Non-Modular:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...12v-fan-atx-v2
    - Or -
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...uiet-fan-atx-v
    Modular:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...ingle-rail-psu
    - Or -
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/620w-...-quiet-fan-psu

These are all Seasonic built and very reliable because of it. I was faced with similar choices lately, and i personally went for the Corsair i've linked you to (if it matters at all).
Unfortunately the modular are out of stock, but the non are in. You could call Scan and ask about when they're likely to be back in stock, but given the choice i'd just go non and save a few quid anyway.
Taking all of the above into account, you're left with roughly the same cost as you started with.

Thanks for all these suggestions, I am going to go with the 1TB drive and the cheap disk drive that you mentioned, i'll stick with the modular PSU because I do like the aesthetic appeal, i'll probably go with an MSI Twin Frozr GPU instead of the XFX one, thanks again.

    Re: First system build

    Glad to help.
I'd still give Scan a call about stock on the modular supplies i suggested, they may be back in soon and it's worth it for a Seasonic.
Are you thinking of this MSI?:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-m...dmi-2x-mini-di
Because that's a great choice. Out of stock too though - perhaps ask about it and the PSUs at the same time. Scan Sales Support have always been very helpful, i've found.

    Re: First system build

    I would personally get:
    Corsair Carbide Series 300R £59.16 -
    Samsung SH-S222AB/BEBE 22x DVD±R, SATA, Black, OEM £11.96
750W Akasa Venom Power Modular 80% Eff' Quiet Fan, ATX v2.3, PSU £64.50
    8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3 £26.59
Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 CPU £19.98
    1.5TB Seagate ST1500DL003 £53.98
    Asus P8Z77-V LX £83.72
    Intel Core i5 2500K £166.98
    120GB OCZ Solid 3 SSD £53.58
    2GB EVGA GTX 670 FTW £303.20
    Grand total £854.63

The case is good quality from corsair and Akasa Venom power supply should be quiet plus good for upgrading in the future. The corsair ram is the same as the one you picked apart from its cheaper at slighly higher voltage same memory timings. Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 is great and seriously overlooked Ive used this one in the past to get a 2600k to 4.4ghz with no issues. The Asus z77 motherboard is great board for the price, the 2500k is about 98% of the 3570k as the 3570k only really has better GPU proformance. 1.5TB Seagate is a great and has 50% more space and the OCZ solid drive is a great proformer with a ocz who have great support. With all the different parts you can get an amazing overclocked gtx 670 FTW which destorys the HD7950.

    Hope this helps

Loose the XFX card. Get any other brand.

I am stuck in a XFX RMA battle that has been raging for 5 weeks. Still no card.
