If you are using paste, it needs to be as thin as possible. Its purpose is to fill the microscopic scratches and imperfections between to two mating surfaces.

Ahh, this is a common problem with laptops.
You're right - the thickness of the pad can play an important role with the connection to the heatsink / heatpipes. Peter is correct in what he is saying for desktop CPUs, but in laptops they often use the pad to 'fill' an actual gap between the two parts.
You'll have to look at the orignal for thickness, but most thermal pads are reasonably close to each other size wise.

I'll be buying a few different sizes I guess, can't remember how thick they were.
