I want to build a gaming room, how am I best to do it?

I want to build a gaming room in my house where multiple people can come over and play the same or different pc games on different monitors and they all have separate save files. Would I be best to do this buy building multiple computers and linking them up through LAN to play connectivelynor separately or am I best to build one top of the range computer that sends feeds out to each monitor? No sure how much power it would need but I'm guessing a lot. If it was one computer I would really only need one copy of the game but then i suppose I could only run the same game once at a time?

    What's your opinion?

I want to be able to add and remove users and keep game saves separate for every username.

Multiple PCs is the way to go. I've never seen a terminal type setup for gaming, and even if you can get it working, if you have a hardware failure on your uber rig, you lose all your capacity.

I agree with b0redom, multiple PCs. I think most games wouldn't like the idea of running multiple occurrences on a single PC anyway and then you would have the issue of controlling them and managing which game goes to which screen. The only way I think it might work is using virtual machines but I think it would be very hard to do. It would be interesting to see it though, it would take a braver man than me to try it.

As for multiple PCs, even if you buy games with no DRM I think most would state in their EULAs that they are only intended to be run on one PC at any one time and then you'd need a different Steam account for each PC unless you setup some sort of commercial style, gaming cafe type licence, if such a thing exists.

Re: I want to build a gaming room, how am I best to do it?

I'd agree with the above also, best bet would be multiple PCs or setting up virtual machines so you can control their resources rather than letting your main OS handle everything individually.

You could always set up a domain and chuck all the computers on it and have a main PC to control their files and accounts, allowing each PC to purely focus on processing the game work loads. Rather than having each computer manage themselves. But again you do have a single point of failure, but you could always configure a fail over mechanism to allow continual operation. May be a bit tricky but at least you'll only need to manage everything from one computer, probably the easiest way to go I think

Either method good luck it'll be a great setup!

Make sure you use bricks or concrete if possible.

Also add at least one opening on one of the walls for easy access in to and out of the room, you might want to put a piece of wood on a hinge so that this covers the opeining when nobody is entering or leaving, this will serve as a great way of excluding drafts inside the room and stop noise from getting out other openings could be covered in glass allowing light to get in.

Both of these are pretty bad ideas. VMs and games do not play nice, unless you're doing something really basic like solitaire. Setting up a domain will require pretty expensive software. Really it sounds like all you want are a bunch of networked PCs connecting with a switch.

You can always set up user accounts on each PC if you want to. Well behaved games should store their saves in a user home directory.

Server setup is free if you do go with Linux based OS

I am more thinking of user management and game storage to cut down costs. If its only a LAN that is.

EDIT: It really does depend if all you want is basically machines running individually or some sort of management/control/workload shifting with primary storage for everything so you just use the other machines as a shell for processing.

I am more thinking about hardware costs

If you want save games to move with accounts, then you could probably just re-direct the my documents folders to a NAS/filestore.

Re: I want to build a gaming room, how am I best to do it?

I shall join in cos this thread rocks

Igonre the PC's for a second... the killer thing is to get the people and the PC's in the RIGHT PLACE.

Without a doubt in my mind, the BEST thing is NOT TO HAVE THE PC's AGAINST the walls....

have the table in the MIDDLE... long... down the middle.

When I've had LAN's at my house, having all the people facing each other WORKS. You have people on either side of the table/bench alternated so the screens fit, side by side, pushed away from the user for keyboard/joystick/mouse space. Then you can all talk, without looking over your shoulder.

GAMING LIKE THIS IS COMMUNITY>> it's laughs.. it's comedy.. it's banter.. its TEAM WORK..

If you have width, put a T piece at one end (or both ends) so the people at the ends face the middle too.

Trust me... getting the people communicating, laughing, shouting.. abusing.. even grooming each other (Trig!"!!!!!) is vital.

With 6 crap pc's and average monitors but facing each other, you'll have more fun, for longer than with 6 top grade PC's and everyone's back to each other.

It's even worth deciding on older games SO the low grade PC's work.

Quake 4 is FAST on basic kit.........Unreal !!...... these games run on OLD PC stock, but MAN... get 6 or 8 mates together in one room facinbg each other, beer/tea/hobnobs and your weekends won't come enough

Cool stuff Zak, that does sound like a lot of fun. Plus if you are playing with two teams, get all of one team to face the other, neither team will be able to cheat and take sneaky looks at their opponents in order to see where they are hiding.

Yes always a key idea to make sure your backs are against each other, from my experience I always had atleast one person keeping a eye out for where I was and entering it into the chat.
