Gaming Laptop with old skool keyboard ?

Has there been any signs this chiclet craze is over yet ?

Remember I tried some last year but had no joy.. so just curious if anythings changed..

Depends on how much you are willing to spend. Since you specifically mention gaming, I am assuming a reasonable budget. Most mainstream makers use chiclet keyboards (MSI, Asus, Samsung, etc). However custom systems such as the P150-EM (Scan calls their version the LG10) are pretty good. I got mine from PWNPCS, since they had the 7970M and are the team were very nice, and responded to all my emails. Early on in my buying process, I had emailed Scan to ask if they had matte screens but never heard anything. Pretty much lost them a customer instantaneously. PWNPCS also allowed me to NOT have RAM and hard drives, since I was going to recycle some old ones. Wherever you get it from, it will be about £1000 for a nice system (i7 and strong graphics).

It has a classic keyboard layout which is illuminated. This will give you an idea what the laptop is like...

Is there no way to replace the chiclets with older keyboards on any of the mainstream makes ?

It is quite unlikely. On some laptops, the keyboard frame is actually molded into the chassis making it basically impossible. On systems with exchangeable keyboards, 99% of the time; only the laptop's manufacturer makes replacements because the keyboards have unique dimensions and ribbon (the flat cable) configurations. As such, it is probable that these are truly 'replacements'. ie, if it came with chiclets, its going to stay with chiclets. Someone else may correct me on this but as far as I have seen, this remains to be the case.

If you really want a good experience (at home or at the office), why not use a USB keyboard and external monitor? (Oh, just remembered, Alienwares tend to have a classic keyboard design...)

I could but its kinda stupid , takes up more space and would look ridiculous if you ever wanted to use it outside.

Old skool as in the sort we had before chiclets , were you could actually press / feel the keys.

My only worry about customs is there resale value , over well known brands.

you know if they weren't so limited a tablet / keyboard would even be fine.... but those keyboards are just no no ..

they should at least offer an alternative instead of forcing an inferior keypad system. , it makes no difference what brand it is , it just plain sucks
