    New system! Any opinions please?

Well, it's time for a system refresh. My venerable C2D E8500 has done an excellent job, but it's time to move on. I was waiting for Haswell, but am inclined to go for a well tested Ivybridge setup now I've read some early reviews.

Current system is in a Lian Li PC60 and comprises:

CPU: C2D E8500 at stock with arctic freezer
    Mobo: DFI P45
    RAM: 4Gb Corsair DHX
    PSU: Corsair HX520

    Recently updated the following:
    GPU to 7870
    Sound to ASUS Xonar D2X
HDD to SSD Crucial M4 256

I'm thinking of the following upgrades to complete the system and allow the GPU and SSD to run at full potential:
CPU: i5 3570K with Arctic i30 cooler (Quiet is very important to me)
Mobo: ASUS Maximus V Gene for mild overclock
    RAM: 8gb (2x4) undecided?? - suggestions?
PSU: Keep my HX520, but did toy with the idea of getting Corsair AX750 or similar for passive fan at low PC load

Any comments or suggestions peeps? Should I go for Haswell or Ivy?

You may as well go Haswell at this point... It is going to be a fairly big outlay weather you go with IB or Haswell so you might as well get the latest and greatest. It's not that much more expensive either. A 3570K on Scan is nearly £180. A 4670K is £188. Motherboards, a bit more of a nuanced choice, but my loyalty is with MSI on that. I have an old Pentium 4A with a MSI board still going strong so I'd have their Z87 GD-65 Gaming. Of course, I have the utmost respect for Asus' firmware and their fan control software on my last M4A88 TDM Evo.

    Mobo: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-z...-(vga)-dvi-d-a

RAM; anything from Corsair or Kingston. Personally I'd go for Vengeance Low Profile 1600 CAS9. Heat spreaders are a bit pointless on RAM and can get in the way.

Agreed, go with Haswell. It's more future proof and costs close to the same as previous gen.

If you have managed to last this long with an E8500, do you really need Haswell or Ivy?

Perhaps AMD would be better value?

Yeah if you're looking for value, look for an AMD cpu
