    Apple Mac Pro - Beautiful

Black. Everything—the board, the aluminum inner structure, the fasteners—is jet black. It looks sinister. In a good way.

    http://gizmodo.com/the-brilliant-ins...ium=socialflow

Say what you like about Apple, their designers are second to none.

When you push this black button, a little black light on a black background, lights up in black to tell you you've done it.

    Because its mostly bull****.

The difference is Apple seldom release lemons, compared to "all the other PC brands together". Sure they've had their very bad products, the iTV mk 1, the hockey puck mouse. None of these things would be allowed if they had some great design control.

Then you get on to things like the new iOS 7 stuff, I mention it only because it's almost entirely deriviative, nothing wrong with that, but when you go round suing samsung (bounce-back patent) for having visual effects which Apple were not the first to produce, you really don't paint yourself well.

Apple to me, has always been a company that desperately asserts itself to be an innovator of design, when really they aren't, they do little more than refine other ideas. This is only important because they use strong media presense and lawyers to force this idea.

This new mac pro is incredibly expensive, it's design is quite innovative, but not very, to me it looks to draw on the designs of http://xi3.org/x7a-modular-computer.php but with the advantage of haswell's low thermal footprints allowing it to be much higher power.

The downside of been limited by thunderbolt for expansion is huge, as this version I believe isn't even the 4 lane one. Want to do some video editing with a bunch of SSD RAID cards, well you're SOL buddy.

At what? Fashion accessories? "Modern" furniture design?

I can see the pedal bin analogy, but to me, it more or less looks like you'd put a cup under it and expect to get a fancy coffee. Looks like a triumph of fashion over form to me. Wouldn't give it house room.

It's all a matter of taste. But yes, with commoditisation design/look is becoming more and more important.
I think that it has more in common with the FT03 than the x13, but hey ho.
NB - I am making no statements as to it's engineering, merely it's form. I should have known better in a PC forum, you happy lot are not really the intended audience.

Agreed on it being a matter of taste. As for"PC forum", if you mean as opposed to Apple, I've bought Apples in the past and, more unusually, have friends and contacts Apple well-placed enough to get me behind code-locked doors in Cupertino to see pre-release products. I'm not anti-Apple per se. Some are very stylish, albeit nearly always at a premium price.

But, I'll pay a premium price for a quality product that I like, such as .... Le Creuset saucepan, etc.

But that device wouldn't get house room if it were a PC, either.

Maybe so, but people who are bought in on the mac ecosystem, used to using the Pro end of the kit, people who do lots of video / photo editing have traditionally been very loyal.

This isn't for them.... At all. For those people, that really sucks. Their current user base are quite pissed.

Nah I think its more the x13, because when you look at the design, its about using a laptop style construction, around a central vent column, PCBs on all sides. That is a very similar thing.

From the external form, its not similar, but I think you might be getting the scale of the thing wrong, its rather tiny.

Now that might matter for many people, but myself I don't find the style that great, and I don't find the trade off, the size for the flexability, good.

I wouldn't say that, I think people are so upset about the inherent design compromise for expansion, that they are angry. It is effectively, all the upgradability of a laptop, with a bit more performance, but a massive price tag. Most of us do not use our enterprise grade hardware as a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish post, so it is of no benefit.

The main issue comes with the attitude a lot of people have about Apple, remember they were busy suing samsung for a bouncing menu? Well they've clearly gone and taken the photocopier to windows phone and newer Andriod versions for iOS7. This is only a problem because of that attitude, if people said well Apple are just like every other tech firm, it wouldn't be an issue.

Something like this is really irritating, because I'm in the market for a new ultraportable. I'm torn between something like a Surface Pro or a 11" ultrabook. I have used my gfs air quite a bit and know that the keyboard and touchpad are crap for me. I have large hands, and I like Delete/Backspace/Home/Insert. Well not like, I need them, easily to not interfere with my work. Have a read of this, for some reason, someone gave them one of the first review models. They don't tell you anything useful at all. I'll be blitzing the default windows install, I don't care its got stickers. They go on about subjective things, and tell me that I should buy a MBA.... Huh?! The air is completely useless to me due to keyboard and touchpad. Not too mention I want the lighter option, with the ability to be 100grams heavier, but with a 18 hour battery life. That's amazingly useful. 100grams more than the MBA of weight, and I can definately get a whole day from it?! But instead there is no useful information in the review, it goes in to an Apple circlejerk.

    This is really anoying.

I think you got the wrong end of the stick here, no one is interested in this 'pro' device because it simply isn't for professional or power users. It's for people who want something fancy to look at, who have a lot of money, and who's high performance computing requirements are suited to something that is so constrained. That isn't going to be a big set of people is it?

Then talking about the design is kind of a negative. The reason this is such a bad device for most people is entirely due to style over substance, many people see this in the Tablet space right now, and are scared for computing.

"Pro" anything, in a computer sense (in my opinion), shouldn't give a tiny mouses bum about beauty or looks and I think TheAnimus sums it up nicely when he says it's as upgradable as a laptop, that's not very "professional".

Re: Apple Mac Pro - Beautiful

Good lord - a sensible and well argued response ! Nearly all of which I completely agree with.

I quite agree that it is indeed style over substance. It is indeed aimed at people with more money than sense. Hence my use of the HHGTG quote. Black on black on black etc. (Unfortunately, I think that no-one quite got it.) Laptop design ? Like the Imacs ? This is different again, and not my point.

People seem to be jumping to all sorts of assumptions here. I don't care whether anyone knows Jobs or Gates in the biblical sense, or if this doesn't perform, or if it costs too much, or even if it's of no use at all. It's a whole new look in a way that I haven't seen before.

I've clearly tapped into a whole vein here about their overpricing, poor performnace ratio etc. In fact I had the same conversation on the other side with my ITD, a huge fanboy. If we can all try and put away the anger and prejudice, actually this is a good looking <strike>espresso</strike> machine.

I tried the Surface RT BTW - I didn't get on with it at all. Ditto my wife's Air as well. Surely there's an Ultrabook that would suit ?

Re: Apple Mac Pro - Beautiful

I was impressed with the size of it to be honest. As long as Apple provide a way to upgrade core components they it might be able to last a while.

More than anything, someone needs to make an R2D2 mod for it. That would make it one of the best things ever.

A lot of people are thinking Apple have another Mac Pro Rack mount version (actually pro) in the sidelines ready to launch when this desk ornament is ready to sell... or rather they're REALLY hoping they do

Time to look into that HP Z Series Hackintosh methinks.
