    Re: 17 Gaming laptop? - £900

    When you say 'general use'?

This laptop will be 50:50 for when it is turned on for general web browsing, downloading, bit of the normal document processing - but nothing in relation to photo shopping/video editing/etc etc. The other half is as I said general gaming.

Both i5 and 1060gtx are overkill for what I use it for, but just trying to plan for that third year of ownership.

Many thanks for all your help mate!

edit: Then I stumble across the below....which is very very tempting for an extra £100, and has a 2 year warranty.

I mean the Core i7 would be better if you are doing more CPU intensive stuff(which you don't do),but the GTX1060 is significantly faster than the GTX1050TI. Look at the comparison of the desktop versions for example:

    https://tpucdn.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1..._1920_1080.png

The Medion also has GSync too,IIRC.

Looking at the GTX1070 version of that Gigabyte it looks reasonably solid and also Gigabyte has UK based RMA too. It does lack GSync, but the spec looks very solid,as the storage and RAM quantity is higher.

This is the review of the V6 version of the same laptop(its a V7) which had Skylake instead of Kaby Lake, and looks exactly the same otherwise:

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gigaby...iew-33787.html

Here is a review of the V7 but with a GTX1070:

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Gigaby....194546.0.html

    The reviews look good.

That same laptop is £1500 on Scan too and was the same price from that retailer a few days ago so £500 has been reduced from the price. TP looks OK for the retailer:

    Re: 17 Gaming laptop? - £900

Thank you so much for all that info Cat, very grateful. I am going to place the order for that Gigabyte laptop I think. Before I do though...... I am debating that 3rd year warranty for £110. Seeing as it will have 'light' usage compared to what it is designed to really stretch itself to, I am looking at giving it a miss. Any thoughts?

You could always add the laptop to your home insurance??

Very true, have always paid for my current one to be covered anyway. It wont cover wear & tear breakdown, but better then nothing.

Thank you again for all your help & extensive replies, I have ordered that gigabyte laptop after spending a final hour going over your last post!

    Re: 17 Gaming laptop? - £900

You were lucky as it was posted on HUKD and its sold out now! However, someone in that thread found this deal for a virtually identical specced Acer branded laptop:

    https://uk-store.acer.com/predator-h...317-51-black-2

    They also do 11% cashback:

    https://www.topcashback.co.uk/acer/

Having said that,Gigabyte do have UK based RMA and you get a free mouse worth over £30 too.

    Re: 17 Gaming laptop? - £900

Just rang them to confirm why I hadn't received confirmation email (typed email incorrectly), whilst on the phone he confirmed they didn't have stock of the gigabyte laptop, and werent expecting any more. He has a cancelled my order as a result.

Very very disappointed, was a fantastic deal!

edit: Ill keep an eye out for that Acer predator though, for £1400 it would need to be 15-20% off (then 11% cashback) to bring it into my price bracket. Ill keep an eye on it, but can't say i'm holding my breath for that level of discount. I might have to accept a step down in laptop quality for my budget, but it will be bitter sweet knowing that Gigabyte was out there, allbeit at such a rare low price.

    Thanks for the heads up.

The Medion seems to be basically a rebadged Clevo,so at £850 is still a very good deal.

Here is the same Medion but with the same spec as that Gigabyte but for £1100:

    https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/3002...1_2140745.html

So for £250 more than the Argos deal, you get a Core i7 instead of a Core i5,a larger SSD and double the system RAM. The Medion does have a GSync screen the Gigabyte lacked though.

Box seems to part of the same group so you can get 1.05% cashback from them:

    Re: 17 Gaming laptop? - £900

Thanks very much again Cat, very grateful for your comments & advise.

Only concern with that Medion is the principle of spending £1100 on a laptop, that they only feel confident enough in to offer a 1 year warranty. That or I spend an extra £120 for an extra 2 years on it... that really adds up. Does really grind at me, fair enough if it is only a few £100, but £1100!?

I am going to wait on that Acer, see if come Friday it's dropped a bit, though I wont hold out much hope. If that fails, I think I will step down to the £850-odd options posted previously and go for a lesser processor, but a bigger graphics card to future proof my gaming. At least comfort myself in having saved £100-150.

I also thought EU/UK law required a 2 year warranty on products?
It does seem a bit stingy, and AFAIK yeah its two years, but I was posting it more as a back up in case there was no deal available in the next few days on other laptops.

I wonder how long the warranty on the Medion laptop from Argos is though??

    Re: 17 Gaming laptop? - £900

Welp, a huge thank you CAT-THE-FIFTH, I ended up buying the AcerPpredator which went down from £1499 to £1199, then hopefully 11% cashback bringing it to only £1069 ish. Not far off a better deal then the Gigabyte one, onceyou include the fanciness & metal chassis of the Acer!

I would never have come across this deal without the help on this thread, refining down my requirements & ultimate finding this deal so a big thank you to all (and especially CAT-THE-FIFTH)

    Re: 17 Gaming laptop? - £900

Sods law, few reviews have the Predator with some deficiencies. Not enough to put me off, but enough to make me consider buying the below, as a sleeker look, same specs, but for £74 more?

    https://uk-store.acer.com/aspire-v-1...edium=referral

    Any thoughts?

After thinking it over with a coffee, I have decided to spend the extra £70 on the Acer Nitro over the Predator. I prefer the less gaudy looks, and build quality is of importance to me which the Predator got knocked down for, but the Aspire praised for (more aluminium surfaces). It also comes with a higher panel display, bigger battery (considerably), and numerous reviews show it to run 10% cooler then the Predator at max load, impressive seeing as it is also a thinner design.

    Two Reviews:

    Predator:
    http://laptopmedia.com/review/acer-p...-yet-so-alike/

    Nitro:
    http://laptopmedia.com/review/acer-a...-end-spectrum/

    Any thoughts?

After thinking it over with a coffee, I have decided to spend the extra £70 on the Acer Nitro over the Predator. I prefer the less gaudy looks, and build quality is of importance to me which the Predator got knocked down for, but the Aspire praised for (more aluminium surfaces). It also comes with a higher panel display, bigger battery (considerably), and numerous reviews show it to run 10% cooler then the Predator at max load, impressive seeing as it is also a thinner design.

Not too bad at all - interestingly that Medion Argos had dropped down to £800 at the same place where you tried to get the Gigabyte from but once you get the cashback, the Acer does look a very good spec for the price.

Just make sure you insure it under your house insurance.

    Re: 17 Gaming laptop? - £900

Well, laptop arrived and after a week of using it some thoughts:

    The good:

    1) Build quality is very good. Feels robust, solid, no flex, materials all seem premium and definitely a big step ahead of my previous Dell (which itself was a £1200 laptop several years ago).

    2) the keyboard has a great feel to it, though the undersized number pad is a bit 'meh' for me, I prefer the full size one.

    3) It comes with tobii Eye tracking, which is pretty nifty actually. It works very well in tracking your eyes & i really hope they start to implement this in more effective ways. Currently all I use it for is for letting it 'jump' y mouse cursor to where I am looking if I make a very slight movement of my mouse. With limited mouse space (ie the sofa next to me & using a wireless mouse) this does prove useful. I imagine without a mouse & only the trackpad it would be even more useful. The problem is I am finding that it doesnt/I cant turn it off in game, which means i can accidentally spin myself round with a slight movement in-game - annoying enough that I am having to disable it.

    4) Speed wise is as expected, blazingly fast for what i need it for, and doesnt even break a sweat in my normal games - Planetside 2 being the most 'strenuous' for it with everything set to Maximum.

    5) battery life is a solid 4 hours+ with battery saver on, even gaming it seems to last a couple of hours

    The Bad:

    1) The bloatware was excessive with the laptop, unfortunately a 'reset' of Windows 10 brought it all back, so next time I do this I will need to install a fresh Windows 10 copy devoid of the total bullrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish Acer have included.

    2) The charger block is cheap, looks cheap and feels cheap. Compared to Dell, with their blue light at the end slim line design and general sleekness this Acer charging block is a very big disappointment. The 90 degree turn on the plug also means a sharp plug of the cable (children...) snags the laptop/drags it compared to Dell where the cable just gets pulled out. Much safer & a possible long term problem I will need to be careful with.

    The ugly:

    1) The Bezel is bigger hen I expected, quite thick all the way round. In this day and edge with edge to edge screens I was disappointed, but looking around this seems to be fairly common with big gaming laptops. Maybe the screen size is dictated by the size of the laptop base, which itself dictacted by the size of the components? My 'Ultra book' Dell work laptop is beautiful, but probably more expensive & only 14" screen size, with a 5-7mm bezel.

Cashback confirmed from topcashback, a helpful £120 off the already 15% discounted laptop.

Still very happy with the laptop!
