Does a laptop need a battery
Hi my brother has an old acre aspire laptop that has problems starting, if he opens lid and presses on button it tries to start but led flashes a half dozen times but nothing, press power button again to switch off. Close lid and leave for a while the charging lights change and then can open lid and press start, all this while connected to mains power, also have done a factory reset just in case.
Does the sound like a battery issue ?
Thanks
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Certainly sounds like the battery isn't taking a proper charge.
What is it like when off the mains?
I'll guess at what your response will be and pre-emptively suggest getting a new battery anyway. Even if the first one is fine, it would still leave you with a spare.
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Thanks took the plunge and got him to order a replacement battery
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Ok update new battery fitted and still the same power on problem, also same problem on mains or off mains. So new battery, charging light goes out after a few minutes of power being supplied, also has had a reset back to factory settings but still the same, anything else that could be checked ?
Thanks
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Could be a faulty power brick or motherboard?
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Power output is showing 19v on multimeter, if it was a desktop I could investigate more
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Wondering if it's a cap that isn't charging properly. Tracking that down would be a right pain.
I'd expect the new battery to have come with some charge in and so I think we might be able to exclude the power brick. To do so, I'd try powering up without the PSU attached EDIT - whilst using the new battery.
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Hi just to update I was able to see it in 5he flesh last night and have tried starting up on mains off mains with battery connected and unconnected also tried to restart in the above scenarios and 5he same outcome, it seems to need a second try or a few extra seconds to try and start. So looks l8ke it is a power cap on 5he board, but I told him to try a local pc repair shop to see if they give a free or cheap estimate
Thanks
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Might just be the charging port, specially if it's plugged/unplugged frequently. I had one come loose on an old HP laptop years ago, easy and cheap to replace in most cases.
Worth a poke, see if it gives
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
To my knowledge, most laptops will work fine with the battery removed. In fact I tend to keep them out if a laptop is to be tied to a desk mostly so it's not being baked unnecessarily. Unless you want the protection of having some battery back up.
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
I agree with Watercooled. The majority of laptops will do just fine without battery, so i dont think thats the problem
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
I use my gaming laptop without a battery as it needs mains for ganes to run properly. Never had a problem doing this.
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
Try to remove the battery and see if it runs on the power supply alone?
Re: Does a laptop need a battery
I had a similar issue.
In the end I just removed battery and kept it connected to mains.
