Mesh, another reason i dont like them.

A friend of mine bought a mesh PC a few years ago.

a 1.4 GHz Athlon (before the XP) this came with 256 MB of Ram on one stick.
Seeing as it was a new build full ATX mobo I expected it to have at least 3
ram slots. I open the thing up and I see five of them, I thought bloody hell thats a lot. Looking closer I notice that 3 of them are SDR and not DDR.

So he was sold a brand new computer which came with DDR yet the mobo takes mostly SDR. Now if you are buying a new computer why would you want old ram slots in the first place.

Talk about retarded choice of mobo.

Lousy choice for a system builder; would have been good as a retail mobo for someone upgrading, say from a PIII or something. At least he's got ONE slot free.

at the samer time you have to reflect on the fact system builders only have an obligation to provide a system to specification at time of purchase, Mesh were probably using these boards as at the time the majority of thier systems were shipped with PC133, for them it makes economical sense, I mean you say he bought it a few years ago, but so much changes so quickly in the computing field in that time, Im not defending the Mesh decision, just trying to put a more corporate and cost effective view point on it....

    Asus A7A266?

It was used at the changeover from SDR > DDR, basically meant they could use exactly the same board for each build, very good for the system builder, but the fact it was an ALi chipset basically doomed it to failure anyway.

I can understand that visi, but you know its not too different from Dell sending out boards without an AGP slot. Also when he bought it, it wasnt top of the range exactly.
I think the total package came in at around £1200 maybe less. So it wasnt right when they where changing over from SDR to DDR, it uses PC2100 infact.

caged it could have been that board i didnt check.
