    Athlon or Sempron?

    Hi all,

I am putting together a new PC for my lil lad. He will need one for the new school year for running Word and Excel plus games.

I have loads of bits and pieces (hard drive, gfx card (excellent excuse to upgrade my Radeon 9800), o/s) and am looking at the Asus Terminator 2. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=212415 as a barebones but I'm out of the loop with AMD.

Should I get a decent spec Sempron like a 3100 or go for Athlon at twice the price. I plan to run XP and will probably get 512MB of Corsair memory.

    Thanks

    NuShuttle

If it was me I'd just get the sempron - if ultra performance isn't what you're looking for then the price difference makes the AMD 64 seem bad value compared to the Sempron...

If you're looking for best value, I'd go for a Sempron.

Why not another shuttle? And why AMD? Intel have the value market sewn right up with the celeron D.

One of the 64 bit Semprons will be your best bet. However, if they are a bit too expensive, you could go for a 3000+ to 3200+ Athlon XP.

I was running a Sempron 3100 for a bit just to see how it went. It was an excellent piece of kit - did all the straight forward stuff well and clocked extremely well when I wanted a bit more oomph. In a budget machine I would definitely recommend it.

Sempron is best bet for a budget machine unless you can get a Athlon XP decent speed (probably second hand). Built systems for relatives using the Sempron 2400 and they seem to be fine.

    Excellent responses guys...

I had thought of this to be honest, but the chief finance officer (and SWMBO) has said no...

My shuttle has a habit of filling up with dust and other crap, even in the relative cleanliness of my office space, imagine that in a small boys room - the damn thing would die in the first week!

I decided to go for AMD to get better experience with these chips as I always felt that I missed out by going Intel for my shuttle. Value does not always = good performance, and I want to give the lad a fighting chance at fraggin' his old man It funny but 2 years ago I wouldn't have touched AMD with a barge pole, now they seem to be everywhere...

Excellent, thanks for helping me make up my mind.

I have used many Sempron CPU's in PC's i have built. I recommend them for a budget system. I tend to use a Sempron XP2500 CPU and an ASUS A7V880 Mobo. Good combination.

Well, despite some missing information (like what actually comes with an Asus barebones - nothing on Asus website - disgraceful!) I have ordered the following from the Scan website today:
    • Asus Terminator 2 AE1
    • AMD Sempron 64bit 3100+ (inc heat sink & fan)
    • Corsair 256MB DDR PC3200
    • Samsung DVD + CD-RW
Should be here next week - I will take some photos and let you know how I get on (nb: I have a spare SATA HDD and a gfx card just in case you were wondering!)

isnt just 256mb ram a bit on the low side?

i never want to use any pc with less than 256mb of ram again, especially when gaming.

if your gonna be using it for gaming, would it not be wise to add another stick of 256?
