Corsair have said (redbeard) that it's only a temporary change before a new version comes out.

My guess is that the old agreement with seasonic has run out and there's been a small delay on the new version so corsair have got CWT to produce a unit to fill the production gap.

That does not sound a plausible excuse to me. Why couldn't they just continue with the original product from Seasonic until the new version was ready for release?

Probably because of the deal they did with seasonic, if the contract was x number at y price, over a period of z years.
when the deal runs out you have a problem, esp if the replacement in not quite ready, seasonic probably wanted too much to continue producing those units for just a very short run and CWT was willing to furnish corsair with some similar spec'd units at a lower cost over a short run.
(note I'm not saying it went that way, just a possible way which shows you why this has happened)


I get the feeling that it's not quite so easy going for corsair in the psu market, when they first burst into the psu market their products where very good and far cheaper similar spec'd units.
They did really shake up the market, proving high quality didn't have to cost twice the amount half decent ones.
however this has caused most of the other psu "brands" and manufactures to step up their game and offer better products for less.
Which has been a problem for corsair as now their psu's don't stand out as much and the margins on them are rather tight, so they don't have much space to drop the price.

The problem is that in the US the CX400W can be had for $15 to $25 on special offer. However,in the UK we are still paying between £35 to £40 which is around the same as the old CX400W.

TBH,if Corsair had de-rated the unit to 380W to 400W at 40C and got 80+ certification then it would have been a better strategy IMHO!

Have to agree with you there. Once a company does something that can appear like something underhand is happening, Smart customers will stop buying their products.

The thing I really don't like the look of is not the 430w which does seem a reasonable unit under jonnyguru testing, it's the 500w and 600w models which still has the same 28a on the 12v, great for an older pc but what use is more 5v and 3.3v only on a current pc?

I've already dissuaded one person from the cx600w as 28amp on 12v is frankly rubbish for a 600w psu

edit: although I can see why corsair have done it, they are aiming at a lower end sector of the market, people who are looking for a replacement for that sub £20 "500w" psu that died, they'll get it because the name Corsair, the fact that it's cheaper than the other big brand 600w psu's and of course they must have 600w because that "500w" wasn't good enough so they must need more

Whatever the deal was with Seasonic, If there is a gap between the contract for the old units and the new Seasonic units being ready I don't think Seasonic would leave Corsair to use another supplier. They could quite easily have just done a batch or two of what they were supplying originally to fill the gap.

It just does not make good business sense to let your customer go elsewhere when your tooled up to produce the product they were buying from you and are suppose to be continuing to supply them with a new replacement product in large numbers. In the past I've actually sold things to customers at a loss just to keep their business until we could resolve the supply problems, In the grand scale of a big contract it is nothing.

Like I said before if you look at the CWT unit specs it appears that the new CX430 is a CWT 400watt unit with 336watts http://www.cwt.com.tw/english/2_prod...il.php?ID=1251 Like Cat said, They could have just badged it as what it was and people would have been OK with that and for the arguement of 'model numbers clashing' they could have just called it 'CX399' or something like that.

In an electronics enthusiast market you just cannot escape being caught out on these things so it is best to make sure the published details are as accurate as possible.

EDIT: Forget to say 336watts on the 12v rail .

Also looking at the numbers I don't think this thing would get an 80+ rating even if it was put in as a 380-400 watt unit, while it would get the 80+ at the high load end it wouldn't make it at the low load end, granted jonny takes it down to 10% and 80+ is 20%, however it's missing 80+ at 20% and if you dropped the rated wattage the 20% number would go even lower and dip below 78w

Most good psu's have an efficiency curve that starts very steeply then curves down slowly, this psu seem to have a more bell curve shape.

It is the AX range. The AX850 is made by Seasonic and is based on their X series PSUs.

I bought the Corsair AX750 and it is absolutely excellent.

Absolutely silent and Gold Efficiency. I'm pretty certain the fan doesn't even spin the majority of the time.

After much reading the AX750 and AX850 are made by Seasonic and are the Newer versions of the Seasonic X-750 and X-850.

Yes the AX is Corsair's new Top line psu, rated above the HX and TX for voltage stability and even less ripple while scoring GOLD on the 80+ rating, the 750 and 850 watt units are based off seasonic's X series, the AX1200w is made by Flextronics (normally known for server psu's) however there has been some quality issues with this unit.
