    New psu suggestions

    Hey guys,

I'm looking to replace my power supply as it literally sounds like someone's hoovering when my pc is on.
I got this old OCZ 1000w on the cheap and its been great but the noice is just excessive (and so is the wattage tbh...

I'm running amd x6 1066T with a 580gtx and possibly looking to get another in the future when i start to lag behind. Can anyone suggest a good value psu that will cover anything i might want to do in the future. Silence is a must, modular would be nice too but tbh i'm not incredibly bothered. My budget would probably be around £100, under that would be nice but if its slightly over i can stretch for it

    Thanks guys

    Re: New psu suggestions

For that spec I would target the 650-750W bracket.

A good shortlist of modular gold efficiency PSUs (in no particular order):

Coolermaster gold silent Pro 700W http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=38626

    Seasonic X-660 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/660w-...ssfire-eps-12v

    600W Enermax Modu 87+ http://www.scan.co.uk/products/600w-...-12v-139mm-fan

    NZXT Hale90 750 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...-12v-140mm-fan

The cheapest is the Coolermaster, it gets good reviews and if you get the Today Only offers it often drops to below £70.

All of these PSUs drop to around the £100 when on offer, with the Enermax usually being the most expensive and usually staying above the £100 mark.

Id reccomend a 650w PSU aswell, i have the TX650W from corsair and it is nothing short of perfect! every connection youd need and the braided cables great, the finish on the PSU's main body is very professional too. its lovely and quiet and they have great customer service should anything go wrong!

Corsair AX-750. A rebranded Seasonic X-760 (revision of the X-750). Hybrid design, fan doesn't spin undeer 150watt load (~170watts at wall). Your system should idle at well under this. At £129 it may be above budget, but silence always costs a bit more. For SLI you might want to get the AX850 at £147.

What about the XFX 650w XXX? It's modular too which is always a bonus

Can't put a link up as I'm new but its £71.96 on Scan.

    Re: New psu suggestions

Not sure who manufactures that one. XFX have a bit of a reputation for difficult RMA processes if you end up with a dud. Personally I wouldn't but might be worth checking with someone who's got one to see what it's like.

    Re: New psu suggestions

I have a non-gold 600w CM Silent Pro. With the deals Scan have regularly on those (and the gold) they are a steal. It's a classy looking unit, I've been happy with mine.

According to this they are both made by Enhance http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/psu_manufacturers

Except that it is only bronze efficiency and by corsair's own noise chart, the noise starts to ramp up above 50% load to 38dB from a baseline 21dB. Setting aside the questions of test methodology, you can safely say that the corsair's noise increases by 17dB (or more usefully it is 3.25 times louder supplying 650W than it is supplying 325W.)

The NZXT Hale90 series by its chart keeps a constant noise level between 20%-100% power, and claims it is less than 20dB across the entire range. It is also gold efficiency - and with much less of a drop off at low/high power draws than the Corsair PSUs.

So IMO the Corsairs are some way short of perfect.

    Re: New psu suggestions

Considered changing the fan or just give it a good oil?

Disclaimer:- There may be charge stored in the PSU when you open it which could be potentially very very painful.

    Or even fatal.

I got a surprising shock off a surge protector once when I shorted the pins of the unplugged unit. It's capacitors hadn't discharged... The warnings they stick on these things are there for a reason.

650W will comfortably do dual graphics cards. See this thread:

    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...n-numbers.html

Dual 6950s and an overclocked system running games at 1920x1080 and the peak draw (from the plug) is circa 500W. Allowing for the efficiency of the PSU the OP was using we estimate the system itself was using 433W.

If you get an 850W PSU you are at best running at 50% load, ideal for efficiency - but only when flat-out. At idle you're below the 20% mark and efficiency takes a real hit.

If you get a 500W PSU you run at what 30%(?) efficiency idle, 100% flat out? Not a good idea as you'll be stressing the PSU.

Much better to have a 650W PSU running at 20%(?) idle, 75% flat out. You'll get better efficiency, spend less on your bills, and the PSU should last longer to boot.
