    Power Supply thoughts

So, I have approx £100 to budget for a replacement power supply to replace my aging Tagan T480-U01.

Main reason is if I upgrade the graphics card (currently 8800GT/512) I suspect it will struggle, as it has 38A on the 12V rail.

I've been looking at the Corsair TX850V2 which is available at £86 at box.co.uk post free (or £94 post free from scan).

But was also looking at the Antec TruePower 750W NEW modular and wondering which to go for. The Antec has higher 12V amps (100A vs the Corsair's 70A), but is slightly more expensive at nearer £100 (but on todayonly for £95.99). Or another option I looked at was Antec HCC-750, which has a 12V rail of 160A according to the spec, but split across 4 rails of 40A each.

What I need is some thoughts/suggestions on this? is the Corsair a good bet? or is the Antec ones a better bet?

I own the Antec 750w. It appears to be a re-badged Seasonic, and I can vouch for it's quality. It's currently running my rig on the left with no problem. It also appears to be silent under my desk. Probably drowned out by all the fans I have going on the GPUs and CPU !

    It's reviewed here.

    Or possibly Atari.

It'll depend what you upgrade too, that still should be plenty for a mid ranged card, for a single high end card, say a gtx580, then you'd want to look at the 500-550w range.
A good 600-750w would cope with a pair of mid range cards.

I's say have a look at the Corsair HX650w http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...-12v-120mm-fan or lower cost but very good XFX xxx 650w http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...135mm-gray-fan
Both should be the same internal, namely a seasonic M12ii-Bronze

Looking at those, they're not much less than the 750/850W ones I was looking at, but 20+A less.

    Re: Power Supply thoughts

the xfx is £71 and modular.

Also you need to look again at some of those ampage numbers, eg just because the HCG-750 has 4 rails at 40amps doesn't mean it can provide 160amps @12volts (or 1920watts) it can actually do 62.5amps @ 12volts (or the whole 750w)
a gtx480 (currently the single highest power consumption single gpu card) uses 308 watts under full stress testing or 25a @12v
Drop down that scale slightly say a gtx560Ti = 202w = ~17a, 6950 = 182w = ~15a (remember these are max load stress test, peak gaming load is generally around 50w lower) your single gt8800 is about 78w load.

Single vs multiple rails is another argument altogether.

    Re: Power Supply thoughts

Decided on the Antec Truepower New 750 in the end, figured the difference between a 600w and the 750w wasn't enough to bother with and hopefully means the PSU will last me as long as the Tagan has (5+ years!) over several builds, and the Tagan is liable to get reused in another system on an old 965 chipset board.
