Need an external 12V Molex power connector - how?

    Hi,

I have an internal SATA bluray drive that I want to use on several computers. I have the necessary esata ports on them so I can easily use that for the data connection, but need to supply power to the thing. I'd rather not buy an external enclosure for £20 (or anything close to that price), I just need a way to get a 12V Molex connector to the drive.....

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could do this? Are there any cables I can buy/make that let me convert from the wall socket to the 12V Molex the drive requires?

Or any other ways of solving this problem?

    Thanks

Maybe I should clarify my existing post...... I'd rather not pay the same amount as I would for a full external enclosure for the drive

There don't seem to be any on sale (Unavailable - DOH), so how hard would it be to hook up a backplate that 'exports' a Molex adapter from the inside of the case to the outside myself?

Thats easy, you can even buy them as part of esata backplates.....some mobos even have them bundled.....but you need to do that to several Pcs....the cost will add up

The other solution is check what volts/amps the drive needs....then buy a cheap dc multi adapter and set it to what the drive needs, snip the end off and wire it up to a molex plug, making your own portable PSU.

You're right about the cost adding up thing. And I really like this idea, thanks, as I have a dc multi-plug adapter lying around.....

Some drives use both the +12 and +5V lines from the molex, so you're going to have to change the voltage once it leaves the power block at +12.

Double check the Bluray drive actually has a molex port, chances are it's going to need what blueball has suggested above unless you're planning on using molex > SATA converters

Ah...... thanks. Didn't think to check on eBay actually.

Yes, the drive doesn't have a molex connector. But that's what my molex to sata power adapter is for

Use a converter - that way you have a external molex and SATA power unit. The converters are more or less free if you don't have one lying about.

Does the one Blueball linked still need a separate female<>female power SATA cable? It doesn't mention it on the page and they usually do.

    I think it does.
