    PSU decisions

Yes, another will it be ok thread and I'mma sorry

    Specs of my aging rig as follows;
    E4500
    Gigabyte mobo
    4GB Ram
    Gainward 4850 512MB
Couple of HDD, case fans, DVDRW drive.

Current PSU on it's last legs (may or may not have been helped along by me).. Been a while since I've gone parts shopping and tbh always valued the advice from you peeps, so...

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/430w-...t-fan-atx-v231

Should be plenty powerfull enough? Is there a blindingly obvious budget chioce these days? Appeals to me being modular and obviously quiet (I hope!). Neither are deal breakers, just want something solid and cheap with future headroom for say an i5 + Midrange GPU build. Why do PSU companies have to make it so difficult

    Thanks

    Re: PSU decisions

For an E4500 and a 4850 you don't want anywhere near 600W. Even 520W is overkill - you won't pull more than 300W with that rig no matter how hard you try to hammer it. As such, your original choice, the 430W BeQuiet, is a really good pick. 430W should also be enough for a future i5 + mid-range GPU upgrade too, but if you want some headroom 500W might be safer.

If you're looking for a budget choice for right now, then this Enermax 350W PSU at £32 looks like a good deal to me. To allow headroom for a future upgrade, how about a Silverstone Strider 500W @ £47?

Thanks for the replies and links all.

My initial thought was a Corsair as they were always highly regarded, but alot of people not loving the new CX stuff it seems?

Spotted the Enermax earlier, felt it might be cutting it a bit close and kinda got in the frame of mind to spend now, save later.

Gotta love Scan and today only deals. That Silverstone is on for £40 (off in search reviews) and also an Antec Truepower 650W at £57 which is tempting me now with it's massive overkill.. PSU I'm replacing is an old FSP 700W today only special from back in the day.. Think it was about £32 and has probably cost me twice that in electricity bills the past couple of years lol. Happy days!

With Corsair, it depends on the specific model. They use various suppliers to build their power supplies, the better ones tend to be Seasonic built. The CX series is their "builder series" (less bells and whistles). They started this off with the CX400 which was based on the Seasonic S12-II, widely regarded as one of the best in it's time. They then pulled the switcheroo and started using CWT as the manufacturer for their CX range, which had obvious results.

The Antec Truepower New 650w is a good buy at £57 and happens to be Seasonic based. An alternative could be the XFX Core 650w Pro (also Seasonic based), they give it all the marketing jazz but they don't need to really - it's a good power supply.

That's the old one, been discontinued
The new GX range (note: the new one's are 80+ bronze) are from Enhance and are much better.

Fan is a bit aggressive so it's not the quietest of psu's but performance is solid, Not out standing but not failing like the old one.

XFX psu's are another good one to consider

The Antec Neo Eco are only semi-modular, it has the 24pin, 4+4pin, 1x pci-e 6+2pin, one 3x molex 4pin + floppy string and one 3x sata string, fixed non-modular
I hadn't noticed that the scan one lacked the extra modular cables, the modular cables supplied normally is a 2nd pci-e 6+8pin, two molex strings and two sata strings (yes they normally supply more strings than there's connectors)
The Antec Truepower New modular versions also follow this semi-modular system.
I do like this semi modular system as the main cables that 80% of builds are going to use are fixed it's only the cables people are less likely to use that are modular.

It might officially have been discontinued, but mehmeh linked to the old, original one. You can tell by looking at the model numbers: RS-*50-ACAA-E3. So it is relevant, unless all the websites selling GX series units are too lazy to update the model numbers.
I know they are better, but achieving a better PSU compared to the Seventeam builts ones was easy as they were so crap. So they would really have to be much better to be worth buying IMO. And this review doesn't convince me that it is good enough:

    Re: PSU decisions

Interesting, both kitguru (650w model) and hardware secrets (450w model) http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/artic...-Review/1234/7 didn't find as bad ripple results.
I think 750w might be pushing that platform a bit too far.

The new GX range is not bad, nothing outstanding, slightly cheaper than some other better units at the same wattage but not greatly so.
They'll be fine for day to day use in a gaming pc with maybe a small overclock, but if you're looking to push the overclock then look for something better.

Also note ebuyer do some good coolermaster case + gx psu deals which knock off around £20 from the total price eg http://www.ebuyer.com/220862-coolerm...le-rc-692-kka3 saves just over £23 on the total.
