New PSU due to cable management

Bought a 880w PSU from maplin when I was desperate for psu and couldn't be bothered waiting on delivery but the wires are too short to have me cables set behind me motherboard in me antec 902 case, so was just wondering what the "850W PSU, Corsair Modular" was like for £130, does anyone have one and has it got a quite fan, and will the leads manage to fit under my motherboard and back out.

    Thanks

Re: New PSU due to cable management

    I assume you mean this:
    Corsair HX 850
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/850w-...v-fan-atx-v291

In which case yes it should be quiet. As the fan on maximum load has been measured at ~1300RPM, but spins at ~900/1000RPM until loads of ~650W.
And cable length shouldn't be an issue as they are quite long on the HX 850 at 60cm on the main cables.

The only thing I would question is the need for 850w psu

What are you trying to power? ie your spec

Re: New PSU due to cable management

I had similar cable-length problems with a new PSU a year or so back. All the cables were long enough, bar one. IIRC, it was the main mobo power lead and I wanted it behind the motherboard mounting plate, out of the way. I found a small extension lead, about £2 from, believe it or not, PC World. Much cheaper than a new PSU.

Depending on what you need, that might be an alternative.

Don't know about modular models, but just put Corsair TX750 in my Define.. It's not quiet!
Not loud mind, but PSU is loudest thing in system of 3x140mm, 3x120mm & 2x45mm fans. Can be heard over 2 meters away. Before Antec Earthworks died system was silent.

    Corsair cable lengths here
    http://www2.corsair.com/training/psu_cable_lengths.pdf
With PSU is just below M/B the EPS cable is long enough. In Fractal Design Define running behind and over middle top of M/B to socket has about 20mm to spare.

Yeah I understand you can get extensions but tbh id prefer a new psu especially a modular as I have wires sitting around unused so in that case madular would be my best bet as you can have what you want connected and have the rest in a bag waiting for upgrades

No not really, depending on the overclock I doubt you're pulling much over 300w at load
The vast majority of your current is the graphics card and cpu, eg the 7950 uses around 180watts under full burn in load, and around 145watts under most games
Hard drives generally top out around 20watts under heavy load (constant read/write&seek, a defrag is generally the heaviest load they come under)
An SSD in contrast uses about 2.8 to 3watts under full load.

For that setup a good 550w to 600w psu would be plenty

    how about the corsair TX550M £76 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-...-eps-12v-quiet

Yes that is probably correct but I am going with 850 simply for future upgrades etc and hopefully wont have to upgrade my psu in a long time
