BF3 makes PSU go on maximum attack

    Afternoon all,

    Never seen this issue before

Just installed BF3 and after 5 mins of playing my PSU fan goes crazy, I'm talking the fastest I've ever heard a fan spin. I can't get it to stop unless I turn PC completely off and back on again, even a reset wont slow it down.

Doesn't do it on other games, Skyrim Maxed etc doesn't have an effect on my PC.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

    Core i5 2500K @ 4.7
    GTX 680
    OCZ ZT 750W PSU

Any help would be great, thanks all.

Re: BF3 makes PSU go on maximum attack

I have heard that maybe BF3 doesn't like overclocks but maybe some of te guys with overclocks may be better placed to shed light on the truth of that. I don't overclock.

Re: BF3 makes PSU go on maximum attack

    I have a QX9650 overclocked to 4ghz with 1.425v (I think, it's close to 1.425)
My Corsair 650w psu is fine.

I think that your psu might not be too good, I'm assuming the rails are being pushed by BF3 pushing the gpu to the max. How long have you had the psu Holden?

Re: BF3 makes PSU go on maximum attack

Plenty of people seem to be playing on oc'd cpu's. Can't find anyone else having this issue with any games let alone bf3. Think I need a more powerful psu? Doesn't do it any other times though :-(

Psu isn't hot, or even blowing out hot air. All other components at normal temps.

Contact supplier and see if they can offer any assitance, be sure to include full specs on the PC, it seems strange. I have a few games that push my PSU quite hard but I'm running my PSU quite close to the limit, you should have plenty of capacity available on your PSU with that set up, you GPU uses less than half the power mine needs.

Re: BF3 makes PSU go on maximum attack

Yer think I will have to call SCAN, thing is if I RMA it and they test it it may show fine as its only BF3 it does it with. Even tried with GFX settings on low and same issue.

Yep, when you put your hand at the back and bottom (where it draws from) the rush of air is huge. Really cool air to so defenetly not overheating. Will triple check but 99.9% sure it is.

Talking to Scan might not result in an RMA, instead you might find they can offer you a solution. I learnt the hard way that it is better to talk to a retailer as soon as you become aware of a potential issue as this way if there is a known fix they can suggest it and you can apply it. I hope it's something simple.

Re: BF3 makes PSU go on maximum attack

Have you tried putting your machine under strain in other ways? Prime95 on all cores, folding on the GPUs?

If it does the same then at a guess it is related to load on the PSU, rather than the specific application running. If it doesn't, I'm not sure. Open Task Manager next time you start BF3, run for long enough to get the fan to ramp up, then have a look at the CPU usuage history - if your machine is running flat out, it may be drawing enough power to make the PSU think it needs more cooling.

As to why it doesn't ramp down afterwards, I think that may be an unrelated issue that gets triggered by the increased demand....

Thanks Dave will give that a go. I have put the CPU under strain with Prime and other demanding tasks. Never so much as a rise before. Never folded on the GPU as it only turned up yesterday.
I have core temp showing on my keyboards LCD when I'm gaming and the cores where well within normal usage, no where near flat out.

Re: BF3 makes PSU go on maximum attack

Not the OC. My 920 @ 3.8 draws a ton of power more than your new shiney 2500k. I'd be guessing either a faulty PSU or some sort of weird corruption in the power profiles in Windows ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Re: BF3 makes PSU go on maximum attack

It could be a faulty PWM chip (controls power regulation, fan speed as well as protection features like overcurrent protection) in the psu, something triggering it to over ramp the fan speed then not bringing it down afterwards.
Or could be a faulty RPM sensor in the fan.

However more testing will be needed.

Running a single copy of prime will not be enough, esp if you've just run the benchmark, what you want to do in run a torture test, Blend and set the number of test threads to the same number as your cores.
Keep task manager open to check the cpu usage across all the cores.
Then at the same time run furmark stability test, to max out the gpu load at the same time as the cpu load.
Just testing the cpu or gpu alone will not generate half the strain that testing both will.
See it the psu fan kicks in then.

Your PSU should be fine, a good 750w psu should be plenty for a i5 2500k + oc + single gtx680 and still have a good chunk of headroom.

I would contact Scan and ask them about it, not demand an RMA, talk to them first they might ask you to make further tests or give you some other solution.
