    Which PSU wattage

    My current Build:
    Intel I7 2600K @ 4.6GHZ 1.38V with Noctua NH-D14
    G skill 8GB DDR3 2133 MHZ (F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL) 11-11-11-30 2N @ 1.5v

    Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate
    LG 24inch LCD W2468L

Corsair AX 1200 overkill given that 50% load is the sweet spot these days for efficiency. I use my build for gaming 75% of the time.

Which Wattage / PSU is the best for the above build, £270 max cost

    Re: Which PSU wattage

is that overkill? yes, unless you where thinking about going sli, even then it might be a bit much.
something in the 600-700w range would be fine and still have plenty of head room.

Quality not wattage, check jonnyguru and hardware secrets for good psu reviews

    Re: Which PSU wattage

Yep seconding what Pob said. A ~650W supply would be running in the highest efficiency range for your computer when gaming and should still be OK for idle.

XFX Pro 650W is good at ~£65
Antec High Current Gamer 620W also

    Or modular:
    XFX XXX 650W
    Corsair 650HX
    NZXT 650W Hale 90
    Corsair 650W Pro Series Gold

    Re: Which PSU wattage

I thought so, my rated system on the Enermax wattage caluclater comes out to around 650w, I just felt with 1250w that gives me a bit more headroom if I ever needed to upgrade in future. Besides the output wont be 1200w anyways and 650 w would give me just bang on 50% usage when stressed.

That's a really bad idea, as we've already explained. The 650W already has the head room and keeps you in the efficient area when stressed.

But it's your waste if you'd rather not listen to advice

    Re: Which PSU wattage

What do you think the max power output of the rig as different PSU calculators have different values and taking into account capacitor ageing will the 850w PSU be ok in 3-4 years time. With the 1200w PSU they will have more than enough to compensate.

When you say it's a bad idea Kalniel, is it because it's too much power and therefore not efficient enough?

I am torn between the Corsair AX 850 and 1200 models, cost is not a problem

    Re: Which PSU wattage

I don't want to go SLI ever for cost and thermal reasons, but I will go for dual card options in future such as GTX 690 or equivalent price allowing. The CPUs' of the future will likely require less power as will GPUs' I suspect.

This will give you a pretty good idea on what wattage you need.
