    Advice needed please

    Hi all,

Need some advice on PSUs please:

So far this year, I've bought new gear as follows -

    Mobo: Asus P8Z68-VLX

    PSU: Intel i5 2500k

    Memory: 8 gig DDR 3 1600 ( 2 x 4 gig sticks).

    GPU: Asus Radeon EAH 6850.

I am using older kit as follows -

    HDD: 2 Hitachi 500meg 7200 rpm drives.

    DVD-R Drive

    BD-R drive

My problem is, that with this configuration, the 6850 stops the PC from booting. My old GPU, an ASUS RADEON EAH4850 runs perfectly with this system!

The mobo, psu, memory and graphics card have all been returned to sellers, tested and returned to me as "fit for purpose".

I think that the problem is my PSU. It's an Akasa PowerMax 850 gaming power supply, which in theory should do the job, BUT there seems to be a problem with the 12v dual rail, which outputs 35amps per rail. The 6850 requires 40 amps, but I think it's only getting 35 amps from one of the rails. This causes the PC to refuse to even get to post imo.

Various people have looked at the system & can't see what the problem is. I've spent a lot of money buying & returning hardware, only to be told that there's nothing wrong with it. I've been posting on another forum, but not really getting any sensible opinions, so I'm hoping someone here can advise me.

Is my analysis good? Should I buy a PSU with a single 12v rail? I pretty sure I'd need >600w with a powerful 12v rail.

I'd appreciate any advice you can give me.

    Thanks in advance,

    Rob

    Re: Advice needed please

For this setup a good 550w - 600w Psu will do something like this

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-...-fan-atx-v231-

    and this

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/600w-...an-atx-v23-psu

and go here for reviews on these

    Hope this helps

    Re: Advice needed please

i have a Corsair HX750 with a single 12v rail design and it is solid as a rock. i have yet to hear it. Also a review i read for the PSU is that it is a 750w silver rated PSU the max load it powered in tests was over 900W and it was still efficient, the reviewer went on to say it could easily have been an 850w PSU. it also has a 7 year warranty which i cant fault at all. oh and its modular.

before that i bought an XFX 650 pro and i urge you to stay away from them because mine had a faulty fan and it was ticking everytime i played games or stressed my system. i did some digging and apparently its a known problem for them so i sent it back and paid a bit extra for the Corsair.

    Re: Advice needed please

Everybody says that the PSU should run my system fine, but the graphics card (6850) refuses to work. The GPU has been back to sellers, and tested fine there. I'm really not sure what I should do.

    Options seem to be:

    1. Pay £60 to local techies for checkup which includes

    Complete hardware diagnostic testing including:

    Power supply
    PC/Laptop cooling fans
    Hard drive(s)
    Memory (RAM)
    USB and peripheral ports
    CD/DVD Drives

    2. Buy new CPU & pray that sorts the problem.

    3. Buy a different GPU (Maybe an MSI 6850) as it only has one 12v rail.

    4. Try returning PSU to Akasa for tests (although that would leave me with now PC for a while and there's no guarantee that the power supply is at fault!).

The problem is that I've been throwing time & money at this for several months now. I don't know who's best to rely on where I live to give me sound tech advice, and this problem is driving me nuts!

I'm now seeing posts on another forum that say it may even be a faulty HDD.

Can anyone offer advice as to my best course of action??

Thanks to all who have already posted

    Rob

    Re: Advice needed please

just spend £60 on a new psu, if your graphics card requires a certain ampage and your current PSU aint delivering then whats the hold up? if you send your graphics card back they will just test it with a good PSU hence why its come back without a problem reported. just get a new PSU if it doesn't sort the problem out (which it should) then send it back.

    Re: Advice needed please

ok i just re read your post again as i have missed the PSU make. that PSU should run your system. ive seen peoples rigs running GTX580's etc with that power supply.

my old systems power supply was a Xigmatek 500W now looking at the box here it has 2 +12v rails 1 at 15A and the other at 16A, now that is rubbish but it powered my Sapphire 5850 xtreme (slightly better card than yours) no problems at all for over a year. and its a none efficient rated PSU.

So, would I be better spending £60 getting rig tested?

It really doesn't matter about having a single powerful rail, that's just marketing hype.

You are better off spending £60 on a new PSU rather than 'testing', at least you have something at the end of it.

    Re: Advice needed please

i would suggest trying to borrow a friends PSU and trying that, if that fails then there is a problem elsewhere obviously. if not and you are still baffled then go for the technicians to look at it. by the looks of it if you have had everything returned to you saying its "fit for purpose" i have no idea at all. have you removed your old graphics drivers? i know its the same brand etc but you still have to choose what series you are downloading the drivers for, now the drivers on your old would be the 4 series and now you need the 6 series. uninstall your old drivers, turn off your PC, then install your new Graphics card and boot. try that?

    One question on this:

If I buy a new PSU, stick it in my PC and still have the same problem, then will the seller accept it back and refund me? This may be a daft question, but I'm a bit cautious, having returned the other gear & had it sent back to me because it tests OK.

I'm not getting BSOD or error messages, the PC refuses to boot (won't even get to POST). Would graphics drivers cause that??
