Question Looking at getting new PSU, likely Antec. Need help as not 100%

    Hey there

I've recently finished my build and a lot of money has gone into it. However I don't mind as so far its the best thing I've built or brought to date.

Now my question is I am looking at PSU's the one I have at the moment is a 750W and well powers everything well but the cable management is an absolute mess at for example my cables are all just laying about in the chassis making it look very cluttered. Not only this it's not helping with my airflow through the case.

So basically I am looking at getting a modular PSU so I do can do some cable management. But I'll need at least a 750W to power the majority of components I have in my case. I have browsed SCAN and well I seem to have found a suitable supply. But my knowledge of them lacks so I came here to get some answers and such first.

So any help on choosing the right power supply would be greatly appreciated and if anyone has used the PSU linked what are your views on it?

    Thanks

P.S. So I can't link so the SCAN Code is; LN28585

According to your specs I think a 550W PSU will be more than enough

The old Truepowers were re-badged Seasonics and of good quality. In fact I bought one.
If nothing has changed then the new modular one will be a good buy. Try Jonnyguru for a review.

My system specs are located on my profile page, and my budget is around £80 really no more.

550W. But I'm looking at overclocking the processor, investing in water cooling and cross firing my graphics card. Do you still think 550W is enough? I don't want to get half way down the line and have to get a new PSU due to it can't handle what I'm throwing at it.

I'd get 650W if you are going to crossfire. Do you have HD 6850 or HD 6870? Either way the max load of those cards are going to come to 300W. Add OC to the equation.

http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp PSU calculator, also has a OC feature to estimate the OC power consumption which is handy..

Hey thanks Mike that link you provided was pretty handy, and my GPU is an HD 6870. So you recommending a PSU peaking at 650W? The PSU calculator is recommending at least 631W with the minimum being 581W

Re: Looking at getting new PSU, likely Antec. Need help as not 100%

With crossfire and all your settings its recommending 631W? That seems quite high from your system specs on the side.

    What is your complete specs?

Hard to find a good modular psu for £80. But heres some

    600-700W:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...ingle-rail-psu (If I remember rightly SilverStone make these)
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...12v-quiet-fan-
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/620w-...-quiet-fan-psu

700W+ (not entirely sure what your setup is to require this, but just for a heads up on some prices. I think this is overkill but if your specs do come up to 650w heres some):
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...-135mm-fan-psu (not the best PSU out there but decent for its price).
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/775w-...an-atx-v23-psu
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...eps-12v-atx-v2

Check your specs again I would be surprised if you needed 650W+

Your looking at something like this >>>> http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...v-quiet-fan-at

I rate ocz psus and it will do what you need it to do

and your HD6870 only needs this (Radeon HD 6870 - 28A and a 500W PSU minimum) plus additional hardware so the PSU above meets all these needs

Re: Looking at getting new PSU, likely Antec. Need help as not 100%

    Mainboard : Gigabyte Z77-DS3H
    Processor : Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3300 MHz (not overclocked yet)
    Physical Memory :8192 KB (2 x 4096 DDR3-SDRAM )
Video Card :AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
Hard Disk : Hitachi HCP725050GLA380 ATA Device (500GB)
    Hard Disk : OCZ-AGILITY3 ATA Device (240GB)
Hard Disk : Seagate ST1000DL002-9TT153 ATA Device (1000GB)
    DVD-Rom Drive : Toshiba-Samsung CDDVDW SH-222BB
Network Card : Attansic (Now owned by Atheros) AR8151 PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Controller

So above are my specs. The reason it probably was so high at 631W Is because I added the crossfire, and water cooling. Plus the overclock, if I take them away it comes down to 500W. The reason I added them was so when I come to adding those components I would still have more than enough power without having to upgrade my PSU. Makes some sense right?

P.S. Haha, just looking at the storage opinions it may be a little overkill ;D

Re: Looking at getting new PSU, likely Antec. Need help as not 100%

Yeah makes sense. If you are going to be upgrading your hardware which requires that amount of power then yeah I would go for 700W+. Surprised how power hungry it is.

Because modular is expensive I would personally go for this:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...12v-quiet-fan-
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...an-atx-v22-psu

Yeah they are out of budget but they're very good for an extra £10. The OCZ I mentioned is good if you don't want to go over budget.

You can cable manage with non-modular, yeah it's difficult but in my opinion the extra money for a modular just isn't worth it.

If you can cable manage I would look at these:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...12v-fan-atx-v2
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...v-quiet-fan-at

Well cheers Mike. Theres some decent PSU's there and yeah that OCZ one is still looking pretty decent. I suppose I could go a whole lot cheaper and get a non modular, but wheres the fun in that? ;P

But seriously my cable management is hideous at the moment and my PSU fan is pretty loud compared to some, so I'm still unsure and I have till the end of the month to decide. Oh and did you view the one I linked to begin with?

Yep thats the one. I was looking at that cause it seemed to be about right in every aspect plus it comes with a 5 year manufacture warranty and I've always been told to get PSU's and well any bit of hardware with a decent warranty in case one day it turns round and is like "No I don't want to work for you anymore"

OP, the Antec you've linked/provided the Scan code for is pretty much the best that's been listed so far. And if ~650W is your estimated draw, go for 700W minimum. 750W is fine as power supplies generally peak in efficiency around the 75% load mark and an Antec with Seasonic internals is just about as good as the market gets - especially for that price, modular too.
