need help finding a source for ATX ps/3 psu's
This is more complex a problem than it might look at first glance.
we've got a lot of pc's at work which are all built in old model chieftec mATX cases, great things really solid and can take a pounding (I can stand on them without damage)
The problem is they use the old PS/3 ATX standard PSU's and we're having problems getting hold of them for a sane price.
"Normal" ATX (actually it's called PS/2 ATX) psu is 86mm high, 150mm wide, 140mm long
PS/3 ATX is 86mm high, 150mm wide, 100mm long
Basically PS/3 is just a shorter than normal ATX psu, the cases we have make use of this short size to reduce the length of the case to just 350mm, try and put a standard atx psu in and the optical drive gets in the way.
Now the problem is that this form factor has gone out of favour now, only two of my suppliers can get hold of them both have to ship them from the US so will cost us £70 for a 300w psu
When getting the new chieftec matx cases (which use standard ATX) with a 350w psu (CWT made) would only cost us £50 We cannot justify that sort of expenditure
However it's a lot more work to strip a pc and build it into a new case than to change a psu.
We can get refurb psu's for £35, but I'm not sure I'd like to trust that.
The only company I can find still making this formfactor is highpower http://www.highpowersupply.com/product-ps-sia400M2.html and I can only find us retailers selling them :(
Another option would be an SFX psu and an adaptor plate eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-each-SFX...-/200588599853 but again I'm having issues finding them.
Can anyone help?
Re: need help finding a source for ATX ps/3 psu's
The SilverStone ST45SF SFX power supply includes an adapter plate, review here.
However, it's not much cheaper than your £70 option from the states

Re: need help finding a source for ATX ps/3 psu's
I've managed to fit a mATX PSU into a ATX case slot without too much issue. The top screw will align without a problem in my experience (so use it) - it's normally fairly secure even with just one in.
Depending on how hacky you want to get, you could dremel a PCI slot backing plate from the case to another hole on the PSU. Should only be a few mins a work for each one.

@DDY nice to know that one does come with an adaptor.
@Agent, while I'd happily do that at home, no way I could at work (a school) A PSU held in with only one screw and a big hole in the back would be far too tempting.
Messing around hacking up metal, again something I'd do at home not at work.
