I'm thinking of getting the XFX semi modular 750W. Same Amperage as my current TX, but hopefully it will be quieter and it's also more efficient.

However I don't know whether it would be better to get the 650W version - only bronze efficiency, but 9A less for £4 less. Would it being at a slightly higher load mean it could be quieter?

So for a mere £4 you get better efficiency, more power and modular???

More efficency, 9 more amps... Both are semi modular.

Re: Corsair PSu Fan Noise/ RMA

Why would you want less amperage? Higher load = louder so you want the 750w version ideally. Looking at your specs 650w would also be fine but 750w for £4 extra isn't bad either

I said that because with my current 750W,the load is just about at the point where the fan kicks up a notch . This means that when I idle, browse or come out of a game, yhe fan slows down -this is what causes the noise I'm hearing. I was told that if the psu was under more load (e.g. I sli'd) I wouldn't hear that noise.

Of course it could just be that there's a fault with my psu be in which case the XFX 750W would be ok. Which it probably would be ;-)

Re: Corsair PSu Fan Noise/ RMA

under more load the fan would just be louder, that's no way of solving the ticking problem

    Order the XFX already

The corsair tech support guy said that what I said would work...
Ordered the XFX 750W! Didn't realise that on other sites its around £100!

XFX arrived today! Still not sure of 750W is a bit much, especially when I've realised that the difference between the max efficiency for a 650 vs 750W is 3% :-P
Although I'm not really bothered too much as the 'wasted' stuff isn't really wasted... And hopefully that 3% less power wastage will add up :-P

Probably will have to make the psu swap next week when I have time :-D

Not sure if it was worth making a separate thread in the scan section but :

If I were to have a pblem with my power supply after the 2 year RTB period.... What would I have to do? Would I be able to sort it out through Scan?

hmm I think it's up to Scan to deal with any problems as you bought the product from them as long as it's within the manufacturer warranty period. I'm pretty sure this is how OCUK deal with it thus why they are well regarded for their customer service. Although Scan might be different and tell you to contact manufacturer instead, not sure though so worth asking them directly

Re: Corsair PSu Fan Noise/ RMA

I got the reply from Scan.... they said they would be unable to do anything for me after the 2 year RTB period I don't know if it's worth switching (again) to another PSU with a longer RTB or geting it ffrom somewhere else ( the same one was £13 more on OCUK )

Unless XFX Customer Services aren't as bad as before/every makes out...?
Or the initial 2 year RTB would be long enough for any major problems to develop...

Don't worry mate I doubt anything will go wrong, if it does then it'll be within the RTB period for sure. You should start looking to replace a PSU anyway after 5 years

I was more worried about anything happening between the end of the rtb and the end of the warranty.

I do not see why you should be worried though.

Sure you see many instances of poor rma experiences, however as somebody pointed out on this forum, people are much more likely to report bad experiences than positive ones.

Just to clarify have you actually registered the PSU with XFX themselves? If not you need to within 30 days of purchasing to get the 5 year warranty.

Just don't really wan tto be in a position where I'm waiting endlessly for a new PSU. I do see now that I shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Yeah I forgot about that. True. That's actually why I ended up with a noisy WD HDD, cos a lot of people had preoblems with Seagate ones. Although that might have been linked to them moving factories to China.

I'll be registering the psu today probably, although I can see why Corsair is so highly regarded - good products, decent pricing and good customer service - I managed to ring their technical support for free using SKype. For XFX it looks like there's a premium number for the UK

Edit: I registered pn the XFX website, but ti says that I have a 750W Black edition, not the XXX? The code I used was from the box, not the actual product however. I'll check if this is what has caused it.
