    Re: psu or gpu?

*new* build using old parts (new mobo, DVD drive, Case & cpu, old HDD, eBay GPU, PSU and used ram)

    I don't think it's a short because it's only on load?

I've tried both PCI-E conectors and they both cut off :/

And I'll prime and furmark and report back

What are your power settings and have you tested the ram?

I take it you are using windows? I meant the power saving options in the control panel. It could be set to power saving which could cause insufficient power resulting in a shut down.

If you are using windows 7 i would try using the windows memory diagnostic tool as this can be a good way of finding any memory problems.

I'll do that in a min. BTW the PSU is really warm / hot (42oC - 53oC with a infrared thermomitor) at max load?

and I'll look at the power saving options

    Re: psu or gpu?

Those temperatures are not that high, seem OK.

As Pob mentioned how are the voltages? Want to make sure it isn't fluctuating anywhere. Software to monitor voltages isn't too accurate but will give you an idea.

However 14 minutes of testing isn't that long, does it happen with all games? How long does it take or is it completely random?

    Re: psu or gpu?

Your PSU seems quite hot actually, how is it positioned? Take it out or place it somewhere to get it good cooling for the minute and check again.

A hot power supply is a good indication that it isn't producing "clean" current, or something is overvolting/working too hard, provided there is good airflow.

    Re: psu or gpu?

When a power supply is that hot it may no longer meet it's efficiency rating, so it's probably under 80% efficiency when its running that hot. It may mean that power supply is on the edge.

That isn't to say it's definitely the power supply, but peaking at 53c is high.

    Re: psu or gpu?

Is that the stock cooler for your Athlon? The PSU is facing up so it could well be sucking the hot air from your graphics card and heatsink.

Does your case have a vent underneath the PSU? May be worth turning it over to intake fresh air from the outside of the case to see if that helps the temperatures firstly

    Re: psu or gpu?

    Oh yeah, my bad

In that case it may well be intaking all the warm air from your components. The back fan may actually not be doing much for airflow, what fan is it?
