Are All PSU The Same Size

Planing a new build so in the market for a new PSU and as I am looking through some look bigger then others.

Is this true or my eyes playing tricks?

Re: Are All PSU The Same Size

No, the size varies within the ATX specification - the height and width is standard to fit in the standard mounting plate in an ATX case, but the depth may vary.

The fan position may also vary, so if space is tight, you need to look at the dimensions carefully, or refer to the mfr's drawings if you can.

Re: Are All PSU The Same Size

As peter said, Width and Height are fixed within the ATX spec. Depth can vary but it shouldn't matter since you only mount the backplate which is independent of the height. Depth may be a concern in smaller cases (eg. CM Elite 120 or Silverstone SG07) or if your case has other components in the way but this typically isn't the case.

So, the two above PSUs are interswappable despite the obvious differences. The other PSU sizes such as mATX and TFX are much more consistent.

Re: Are All PSU The Same Size

PSU's tend to get longer once you go over 750w but it depends on the manufacturer really. The only thing you can do is check reviews or go to the manufacturers websites to check dimensions. A lot of online retailers don't list dimensions or are totally wrong.

I should have said more but it is depth which is the problem, the PSU will be mounted in a 1953 Bush AC 34 radio casing. Sideways mid mounted with the power lead and fan exhaust.

Just a quick secondary question, is it ok to mount a PSU on it's side.

Re: Are All PSU The Same Size

I don't think it makes any difference what way it is installed. This sounds interesting. Are you doing a build log?

Re: Are All PSU The Same Size

IIRC 420mm depth is about as small as you'll get with most PSUS, you can get miniitx/server ones that are smaller, but you're trading off power output.

Yes, power supplies don't care much whichever way you mount them. One piece of advice, since you are building a unique system in a confined space, consider TFX or mATX power supplies. Examples on Scan page. They are quite a bit smaller which is beneficial in a tight build.

Is this related to your other post? Because these smaller power supplies don't output as much as their larger ATX counterparts.

Yes I should have done a round up of questions, but working through list on components adding item to buy, I found different problems as I came across them. The machine will never be moved (not like taken to LAN parties) so a PSU sticking out the back by 20mm should be no problem.

Will be running 17 4770k, 3 HDD, 1 DVD, 5 fans, 1 GTX 560 Ti and 1 cold cathode, so be going with a 750W.

Re: Are All PSU The Same Size

They vary in size. It will also depend on the case that you use. The top mount or bottom mount will vary depending on the manufacturer. The wattage can vary the size. The standard that you are going to use will limit the supply needed.
