UPS advice needed
Hi Chaps!
Looking to buy a UPS for my server, however I am a little bit confused after my google session to try and find out more about what to go for.
Now I know what the difference is between line interactive and online UPS's is, but with the line interactive UPS, does the switch over time actually cause issues? And there is a lot of controversy regarding simulated sine wave UPS's and active PFC power supplies in that they can cause damage to the PSU. Any truth behind this?
I'm looking at this unit specifically as it does seem fairly good value (based on the fact that FSP make reasonable PSU's) but it :

The PSU in my server is a Seasonic M12II-620 620w unit, so decent quality unit.
Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated!
Cheers!

Re: UPS advice needed
APC Smart-UPS. Line-interactive is just fine for the UK, unless you are in an area with pretty bad "dirty" power, in which case the APC on-line "RT" series could perhaps be worth considering. Please observe the greater inefficiencies in online UPSes - they can be very inefficient at low loads, so buy the size appropriate for your needs.
Dale Power Solutions also sells what appear to be good quality online UPSes at excellent prices, which I would also perhaps consider: https://www.dalepowersolutions.com/u...cts.php?cat=72
For second-hand UPSes, I can recommend the ebay seller "ups-trader" - I get my replacement (new) batteries from them.
In short: APC Smart-UPS line-interactive (but not "SC" series) for 99% of people, unless you have either extremely dirty power or a very expensive load.

Cheers mate!
I take it this one should do the trick then? My server specs are: amd fx6300, asus m5a97 mobo, 8gb kingston ecc mem, 4 wd red HDDs, basic gt610 graphics card, seasonic 620w psu, running server 2008 r2

My knowledge in the UPS market is severely lacking at the moment I'm afraid  so sorry for sounding like a potato!

Well, the damage is done. Seems more than sufficient for my needs from the reviews I've read :)

Re: UPS advice needed
The line interactive switching time shouldn't generally be a problem for PCs as the hold-up caps can keep the system powered for a short while during the switch.
As for sine vs stepped, there doesn't seem to be an authoritative answer; some APFC PSUs will work fine on stepped, whereas some may malfunction, depending on the design. Price or premium brand status don't seem to matter that much, IIRC I read some Seasonic PSUs won't operate correctly on stepped wave.
Some of the newer APC UPS's actually bypass much of the circuitry such as the autotransformer to improve efficiency under normal conditions, which is an attractive feature IMO as some UPS's can have terrible efficiency for something which doesn't do anything useful most of the time!

Re: UPS advice needed
Thanks for the help chaps! The APC UPS is working great with my seasonic PSU, no glitches when it switches, and sits around 90% efficiency (as reported by the UPS). Very happy with it :)
