System shutdown

As soon as I start a game (Dota 2, L4D2), the system turns off. Applies for furmark too.

Rigidgems works fine (but isnt GPU heavy). But rigidgems with prime95 shuts it down.

Does not happen for prime95, Intel burn test.

The system won't turn back on, until i turn the PSU switch on/off.

Yesterday there was a burning smell for a brief moment when playing a game, dont know what it was. Played a dota game in the morning, it was fine. Tried again in the evening, crashed.

What could be the problem? No overclocks on gpu or cpu. been reading around that it could be a faulty PSU surge/OVP/OCP something. Might have been that which was burning yesterday.......

I just hope it isnt my gfx card.

Have you checked the fuse in your plug??

Interesting point there, but if the fuse is blown, the system wouldn't turn on right? Anyway, the (extension) cord plug was a bit smelly, opened it up and no signs of burning.

I isolated the PSU plug and connected it separately to the wall, with the cord also to the wall. Still it shut down. Then I switched the PSU cable with another one, still it shutdown.

I disabled Core 4/5, 6/7, and then ran Rigidgems + prime95. The system didnt crash, but a buzzing noise was there whenever rigidgems was run.

Tried a game of Dota too, and same noise, no crash.

It seems if it goes above 300W (on my meter) the system crashes. With 4 cores disabled and gpu core clock reduced, i reached ~275W on the 'meter'.

Sigh, ...guess its time to contact Scan again. The thing didnt even work for a month before going bad. Any suggestions on replacements? I dont want to get another Coolermaster... want to try the Seasonic 550W one (but seems like its n/a atm).

I know it seems unrelated but I had a problem like this a few years back. The issue was with the standard intel CPU fan, it wasn't applying cooling correctly. After buying a new CPU and GPU fan (to be sure), everything was back up and running wonderfully. Maybe use a program that can monitor your core temps like coretemp or speedfan to see if they are running hot. It was a bit of a nightmate pinning it down as it was instant and not so obvious when it shutdown.

Failing that, I would look at getting a replacement or larger PSU.

Might be worth checking all the connectors are properly inserted (particularly GFX connectors) if there is one that is not made properly, then as the load (supply current) increases, the voltage drop across a poor connection will increase until the system shuts down. That will also generate heat, which would account for the smell of burning. You might see some discolouration of the connector housing.

However that is a long shot - the fact that the PSU needs resetting by turning off at the wall plug indicates that the PSU is shutting down - either because it is detecting an overload either because it isn't up to the job or there is another fault somewhere, or it is itself failing.

Again signs over overload may be discolouration (that smell of burning). The fan might be an issue, although some motherboards give an audible warning if the CPU fan stops, but iif you have any temperature monitoring, it might be worth running that to see if you are getting high temperatures anywhere which might be causing the system to shut down.

There was a burning smell the day earlier. It was a faulty PSU after all. Got it replaced.

Yes sounds like it, the V550s is made by Enhance, who are a good psu manufacture, it's a good psu and should be able to go up to around 600w before the overcurrent protection kicks in.
Interestingly the earlier models of the V series where made by Seasonic
