Question Compatible PSU for Dell XPS 8300?

    Hi

I need to upgrade the PSU on my XPS 8300, as I am upgrading to a GeForce GTX 760.

I am thinking of getting the Corsair RM750, and I want to be sure it will be compatible:http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EB7UITQ/...82YBEWG1&psc=1

I'm also considering the eVGA SuperNOVA 750G2 80PLUS Gold:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IKDETOW/...5Q1G2RSC&psc=1

Is this also compatible with an XPS 8300, and how does it stack up against the Corsair?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Re: Compatible PSU for Dell XPS 8300?

Pretty sure the PSU in these machines are just standard ATX, so the only thing to really check is the depth of the unit, but I suspect there will be no issues. 750W is mega overkill for a GTX760 though, save yourself some cash and look at the ~500W models. Whats the power output and Amps stated for the various rails on the standard PSU?

    Thanks for your info.

Where would I find the specs for the standard PSU?

Re: Compatible PSU for Dell XPS 8300?

Open up the case and there should be a sticker on the side of the psu. The 12v rail is the most important one. It would appear that your pc comes with a 460w psu. Depending on how strong the 12v rail is you may be ok just to fit the new graphics card. If you still need a new psu then a quality 450w would be more than enough. The pc in my system details only pulls a max of 422w (from the wall) when gaming and even then only playing Anno 2070. Most of the time when gaming it's pulling 220-320w. I have made it pull just over 450w but only by running Furmark and IBT both at the same time, something that would never happen in real usage. A couple of suggestions for you:-

Superflower Golden Green HX 450w £49.99
XFX Pro Series Core Edition 450W £40.14 (Seasonic built unit)

It does seem quite possible that the existing supply may be adequate. At least on paper, my current ATI 7870 may actually have a higher power consumption than the 760. However I've seen many posts on different forums claiming otherwise, and since I've also added a 1TB SSD *, it seems like a good idea to play it safe.

The 750W supplies are only about $30 more than a good 550w, and I like the idea of having room for future upgrades.

    * An SSD doesn't consume a great deal of power - but because it's so much faster than a regular HD, it reduces CPU, DMA and memory downtime, which increases average power consumption.

Re: Compatible PSU for Dell XPS 8300?

If you are set on a 750w unit then I see no reason to look anyfurther than the EVGA Supernova G2 750w. It's a cracking psu built by Superflower and based on their Leadex gold platform but has that awesome 10 year warranty. Jonnyguru gave it 9.8/10 in his review.

Re: Compatible PSU for Dell XPS 8300?

I got the eVGA 750W supply, but it turned out to be too large for the Dell 8300 case.

So I'm returning it to Amazon, and have ordered the XFX XTR 650W 80+ Gold, which is apparently made by Seasonic:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I5HF0KU/...J8RF3R4G&psc=1

650W should give me plenty of headroom for future expansion.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

It is indeed a Seasonic unit as are all of XFX's psu's. There are a few reviews available now and they seem to be decent units. Only 10mm shorter than the EVGA though.

Thanks - you led me to discover that I had ordered the wrong supply!

I had checked the XFX website, and it reports dimensions as 3.4" x 5.5" x 5.9", which very close to the existing Dell supply (3.4" x 5.5" x 5.75"). However the XFX website dimensions were for the TS 650W, not the XTR!

Apparently Amazon does not carry the XFX TS 650W, only the XTR 650W, so I've canceled my Amazon order.

The XFX website does not show dimensions for the XTR 650W supply, just for the package, which is pretty strange. Looking at this image, however, does suggest that it may be 5.5" x 5.9". Where did you find the length?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Re: Compatible PSU for Dell XPS 8300?

XFX's website is useless. I had to hunt high and low to find the dimensions. Eventually I found them in techpowerup's review here. The dimensions are 150 mm (W) x 86 mm (H) x 170 mm (D). What size do you need? Something like 150x150?

Re: Compatible PSU for Dell XPS 8300?

I found one review describing the dimensions as 86x150x170mm, which is, as you said, only 10mm shorter than the eVGA.

I also discovered an error on the XFX website's TS specs: the length is listed as 16 cm and 5.9". However, 16cm = 6.3", not 5.9"! This, plus the fact that Amazon does not even carry the TS series, suggests I need to look further. Other options which do seem close to the Dell supply size:

Corsair Builder Series CX 600W or 750W (both the same size):

    Corsair CS Series 650W/750W:

Check the motherboard plug and make sure its a standard ATX and not a proprietary HP one.

    According to http://www.pcworld.com/product/78898...r-desktop.html

It has a 460w Power Supply already.

If you could confirm the amperage on the 12v rail is high enough I don't think you need to upgrade. (This will be found on the sticker on the side of the PSU)

I found a new wrinkle. Apparently Dell deliberately uses non-standard sizes for PSU and case, to force people to buy only Dell components. And if Dell doesn't sell a PSU upgrade, presumably they figure they can get some people to buy a whole new computer when they want a better video card.

Anyway, the eVGA supply is 86 (h) x140 (w) x 180 (L). The Dell supply is 86 x 150 x 140. 3 of the mounting holes would fit the eVGA 750G2 and are thus presumably standard; the 4th could be drilled.

Any supply I buy is going to be longer and narrower than the Dell; but a supply with length 150mm looks like it should fit. The PSU is screwed to the case at the fan-and-AC-socket end of the L "axis"; at the other end the chassis has a couple of small clips which hold the PSU in place - these are pressed down to remove the supply. The supply is supported by short rails 86mm apart, preventing the supply from moving up or down; these are presumably the most critical, as they support the PSU against gravity. Any of the 86x140x150 PSUs should fit: the 86mm height dimensions are the same, so the PSU will be vertically supported by the rails and mounting screws; the longer supply (150mm) will fit over the clips at 140mm, pressing them down in the release position. The clips will no longer prevent end-to-end movement, but the mounting screws will take care of that.

screw<-------------- 140mm --------------------> Mtg clip (pressed down) <-- 10mm --> right edge of new supply
    (left edge of new supply

So it's just a matter of which of the 86x140x150 supplies to use: Corsair CS650/750W Gold, CX600/750W Bronze, or eVGA 600W Bronze. They all have about the same review level on Amazon (4.4 stars), but the CX has a lot more reviews, for what that's worth.

I noted the model (Dell h460AD-00) but my photo didn't capture the current rating. I'll open the case and try again.

I have been using the 760 video card with no trouble thus far, so it may be OK - at least for a while.

It does appear to match the connector on the eVGA supply: 2 rows of 12 pins, same apparent footprint.
