What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

I was looking at a refurbished power supply (this one: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...efurb-uk-cable ) and it seems dirt cheap for the product.

I know you shouldn't cheap out on a power supply but for the money, this seems like a steal. Does anyone have any experience with refurbished power supplies and/or what are your thoughts on them?

Do they work as new like other refurbished products, or am I likely to run into some serious issues?

Re: What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

It depends on the level of refurbishment, and the warranty offered. If it refurbished to factory standards, then it should be OK, especially if it has the original warranty.

If the warranty is less, that doesn't mean that the refurbished item won't perform to the same standard as the original item, but you may have less protection if it fails, and that is partly reflected in the price.

Re: What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

The CX series isn't a particularly good psu in the first place as they are built with cheap internals. Only a 3 month warranty on these as well. Personally I wouldn't touch it the main reason being it has probably failed before and been RMA'd. Now it's being sold as refurbished whatever was wrong with it should have been fixed but who is to say that it won't fail again and if it does outside the measly 3 month warranty you are screwed.

There's an indication that one of the modular cables is missing, see the questions and check the full specs against the retail version.

Re: What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

I'd be surprised if you needed a 750W PSU anyway - depends on your machine spec, but that's a huge amount of power.

Re: What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

As it's only got a 3 month (assumed) lifespan, I wouldn't buy one. If you buy one new then it's got a 3 year lifespan.
I say lifespan, it's likely to outlive that, but that's the guaranteed minimum.

Re: What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

    Thanks for all the comments!

On a different note, could anyone suggest me a power supply in that same price region (atleast 400W)

And what sort of things should I be looking for when it comes to the power supplies (other than the wattage and 80+ rating)?

Aaaaaanndd: any thoughts on this one? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-...m-atx-v231-psu

take your pick. I'm not sure about Zalman's PSUs, but that looks like a cheap, efficient and semi modular power supply right there

If you want to get an idea of what means a good and bad PSU, read through a few reviews on jonnyguru (assuming you haven't already).

They are good PSUs, but they're longer than standard - not a problem in most cases, but they won't fit some such as the Bitfenix Prodigy.

    Review for that PSU:

TBH, I think it's difficult to find a better one for the price.

Re: What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

I think I might take a plunge with a refurbished PSU. The 3 month warranty is putting me off a bit but one would hope that the refurbishment is up to original standards.

Re: What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

I would say that most refurb units would be fine, it all depends on the manufacturer. Corsair offer a 1 year warranty with all of their refurbished PSUs and I highly doubt that they would re-sell something that's been refurbished without testing it so I guess you kind of have a "No DOA guarantee" of sorts. Food for thought...

I thought Corsair only offer 3 months warranty with their PSUs.

Re: What are your thoughts on refurbished PSUs?

It is only 3 months. That alone is enough to put me off buying what isn't a particularly good psu in the first place.

I was looking at the Corsair AX1200i recently and new they cost circa £250. At Scan a refurbished unit will cost you £160 however it only comes with a 3 month warranty. Bear in mind that new ones come with a 7 year warranty.

If scan offered a 1 year warranty then i would probably bite the bullet but not for 3 months.
