Worrying PSU Fan noise

Need some advice, I bought a Cooler Master G550M from Scan just after Christmas, and though it runs my system fine, I'm becoming more worried by the noise the fan makes. At first I was just a little disappointed that i was louder than I expected, but I'm wondering if there's something more serious going on.

Sounds to me as if maybe the fan is contacting a wire inside the PSU?

Not sure if this is something I could ask for an RMA for as the unit is working normally otherwise.

Noise usually doesn't, unfortunately. If cooling was affected by fan failure then it would.

Ok, thanks for the heads up, I'll see what Comes back from the query I put in. If it's not accepted on RMA to Scan I may contact Cooler Master directly.

I'm pretty sure that a PSU which sounds like that isn't 'fit for purpose'...

The purpose of a PSU is to provide the rated power to components. I've not heard the sound file, but it'd probably have to be producing dangerous (from a H&S perspective) volumes of noise for it to interfere with said purpose.

The mp3 sounds like a farting noise. Let's face it, fans shouldn't do that, it isn't fan noise.

Scan have let me return a graphics card in the past where the fan ran flat out all the time instead of being temperature controlled. Basically, the part was faulty, it was sold as quiet and it wasn't. They were fine about it.

Just point out that it isn't usual fan noise.

That's my concern. It might be working for now, but not sure now long that might be for!

I had that kind of noise with two(!) XFX PSUs. One was an RMA and the second was sold as heard because it was making the noise only sometimes.

The XFX which was subject to RMA got green from both the manufacturer and the vendor to be sent back. Just ask the vendor to help you out (90% that he will). Also, I found out that the noise wasn't constant and was dependant on the position and orientation of the PSU.

Interesting, I tested the PSU when it arrived with fan facing up, and the noise was the same is it is now that it is mounted with the fan vertical (i.e. PSU on its side), but not tried with fan facing down. Not that it makes much difference, as the case I need it for is a Silverstone GD09, so need the PSU on its side.

Swapping out fans on PSUs is usually pretty easy, although with usual safety caveats i.e. only attempt if you are a competent person, let caps discharge etc etc

However as it is still in warranty I'd pursue that avenue.

Have now contacted SCAN and will be sending the unit back through RMA for an exchange.

As the OP stated that he had RMAd the PSU some months ago, further advice seems superfluous.
