Which power supply for this system?
I'm looking to power this kit:
Intel Core i5 6600K Skylake CPU (O/C to 4.6GHz)
Asus Z170-K motherboard
Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3 cooler
16GB Corsair Vengeance 3000MHz DDR4 RAM
MSI Radeon R9 390 8GB graphics card
1 x SSD (probably a 256GB SSD)
1 x HDD (probably a 1TB HDD)
I imagine a decent 650W would be plenty? Just to reiterate CPU would be overclocked.
Re: Which power supply for this system?
A quality 650w psu would be more than enough. Take a look at the EVGA Supernova GS 650w (Seasonic built, fully modular, gold rated and a 5 year warranty) and EVGA Supernova G2 650w (Superflower built, fully modular, gold rated and a 7 year warranty).
Re: Which power supply for this system?
For a single card setup,a decent 500W PSU would be fine IMHO.
Re: Which power supply for this system?
i reckon you'd need 350-400W of actual power draw, but the decent PSU models tend to start at 480-500W so don't look lower than that. Below that I doubt you'd get enough out of the 12V rail to make it work, and you tend to get better lifetime when you don't run a PSU at 100% load.
Re: Which power supply for this system?
Hexus use an overclocked i7 4770k in their test rig.
R9 390 review power draw charts: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphi...nitro/?page=11
R9 390 rig draws 300W at the wall. Power supply is a platinum-rated 760W, so minimum 90% @ 20% (DC load 152W = 169W at wall), 94% @ 50% (DC Load 380W = 404W at wall).
Applying a sensible efficiency curve, you're going to find that the 300W at the wall is no more than around 280W DC draw. Most PSUs are at their most efficient at around 50%, so a decent 550W would be just about perfect. although a good quality 400W supply would probably more sufficient! Unless you get a really good deal or you're advance planning for future purchases (crossfire, perhaps? ;) ) I wouldn't bother looking over 600W.
Re: Which power supply for this system?
Thanks for the replies, all. So I might be able to get away with a decent 500 - 550W PSU which will leave me some room for a potential future upgrade.

Re: Which power supply for this system?
Agree, stick to 500W. Non-modular (personally) , unless you can't or won't hide the excess cables.
for a entry level unit, even a EVGA 500W PSU would do it for you (£35 @ Scan, EVGA 500W review).
Re: Which power supply for this system?
be quiet seem to be good also?
Re: Which power supply for this system?
May I'm add, I'm assume because of your choice of a Be Quiet! Cooler & MSI graphics card with Twin Froze fans you are aiming for a quiet, if not silent system. If so, I'll suggest looking for a PSU not based solely on it's Wattage but how quiet it runs at it's peak usage i.e. around 400w from your system specs.
This may mean looking at a larger wattage & more expensive PSU that suggested above but may provide more scope for future upgrades & reuse.
Using this rational I'm chose a Corsair AX760 which I'm picked up for £120. The fan doesn't switch on until beyond 400w so is totally silent - the only noise I have is a noisy 3tb HDD!
I'm believe there are PSUs from EVGAs, XFX & Corsair in the £80 to £90 range you should research.
Re: Which power supply for this system?
Radeon R9 390 8GB 275 Watt tdp
Intel Core i5 6600K Skylake 91 Watt tdp
sata is probably all 3amp and 12volt, watts = 3A × 12V = 36W

TDP is a very poor way of estimating system power draw.
Re: Which power supply for this system?
the tdp is the maximum possible watts the device will use when at full load, then catch fire, if you add all the basic tdp`s, and sata watts, and choose a fan as they normally have random amp`s on the sticker, you can add all the watts together, and then add 15%/10% to cover the efficiency of the bronze/silver/gold badges

Nothing right in that statement.
TDP is not the max possible watts the device will use.
Adding % to cover efficiency is incorrect, since PSU are rating by DC load, not at the wall.
Re: Which power supply for this system?
bronze replaced 80 plus badge, silver is 85, gold is 90, platinum is 95
so if you have a 650 watt psu, and it has a bronze badge, you will only really have a 530 watt psu

No. If you have a 650 watt PSU you will always have a 650W PSU regardless of badge. They'll just draw different amounts from the wall.
