Any Reason I shouldn't go for this PSU?
Hi all need to get a half decent PSU for my son's new pc build is their any reason I shouldn't go for this one?
Corsair CP-9020102-UK CX550M 550
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CP-...2Bcosrais&th=1
Will be powering the following:
Gigabyte Z77-UDH5
Core I7 2600K
Radeon R9 290
1xSSD
1xHDD
Optical drive
Couple of 120mm fans
So if anyone can recommend anything better for the same money please let me know.
Cheers
Jim
Re: Any Reason I shouldn't go for this PSU?
They are made by CWT I believe but the consensus is that the new models are much better than the old ones. Personally, I wouldn't have any issues running it in that rig.
You've just made me realise how expensive PSUs are now I've clicked that link :(
Re: Any Reason I shouldn\'t go for this PSU?
Doesn\'t seem that great a deal to me. It\'s OK, but nothing spectacular.
You can get a Fully modular Silverstone 500W 80+ Bronze unit for the same price, or a 600W model for a few quid more.
It\'ll be fine though - nothing wrong with them.
Re: Any Reason I shouldn\'t go for this PSU?
Yeah had a look at that Silverstone unit & i\'m not all that impressed with it from a performance point of view. Assume we\'re talking about this one, SilverStone SST-ST50F-PB.
Re: Any Reason I shouldn\'t go for this PSU?
Yes. I had one running my son\'s rig for the last couple of years.
Re: Any Reason I shouldn\'t go for this PSU?
The corsairs ok, have one in my sons machine, never had a problem and he games on his system an awful lot.
Re: Any Reason I shouldn\'t go for this PSU?
The latest CXM PSUs look quite solid TBH.

Thanks that's kind of what I thought although finding any solid details or reviews on them quickly was difficult.

Another alternative:

This gets even better reviews:

There is also this Seasonic modular unit:

Found this one:
http://www.hardwareinsights.com/wp/c...and-evaluation
They didn't like it due to poor performance and poor components.
The Amazon price isn't even cheap. Personally, given the choice between a so-so quality modular supply and a quality non-modular supply I would go for the quality. Modular is something you have to be prepared more for. That is, decide on the quality you want and be prepared to spend another £10-£20 for less cable clutter. Although semi-modular might be worth considering too if you're going to use a dGPU (semi-modular usually have mobo, CPU power and GPU power fixed).
The ones CAT linked:
The EVGA 650 W G2 is SuperFlower based on their 'Leadex Gold' design.
Scored 9.4 from http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...Story&reid=429
And 9.1 from http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/E...erNOVA_G2_650/
The EVGA Supernova 550 W Gs is Seasonic. Scored 8.9
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...Story&reid=438
The Scan Seasonic is obviously Seasonic. An old design now but that not necessarily a bad thing as Seasonic know their stuff and have had few years to refine that design.
Getting a smaller supply is usually an option (a lot of people go crazy) but those Hawaii cards can be quite power hungry (although a lot of them can be undervolted), so 550W is probably a good start.

Well, judging from these two reviews of the 750w versions from JonnyGuru, they have improved a lot:
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...Story&reid=416
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...Story&reid=486
The first one is the old version and scored 7.1, the second is newer and scored 8.7. Pity JG didn't review the 550W versions. This is one reason to buy too high a wattage: almost nobody reviews the lower wattage supplies and while the different models in the same series should be similar it's always nice to read an actual review of the actual supply (although manufactures do love to change things, but hopefully there isn't too many doing a Kingston V300 type bait-and-switch).

Works a treat and is quite quiet and frugal. Oodles of spare power capacity as well.
Re: Any Reason I shouldn't go for this PSU?
I've cancelled the CM550M order and gone for the Seasonic unit as that's a brand I trust and have very good results with in the past. Thanks for the input from everyone.
Re: Any Reason I shouldn't go for this PSU?
...and, of course, Scan have just dropped the price on the Gold rated Corsair 550W to £60.
Re: Any Reason I shouldn't go for this PSU?
I've had the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550w for awhile, extremely well built, and quiet.
Here's the full review link to: JonnyGURU
Re: Any Reason I shouldn't go for this PSU?
The G2 is a fantastic PSU and is tier 1 (the best tier). I can't post links yet but if you search "PSU Tier List" on google, there are two sites which split different PSU into tiers.
