i5-6400 with a mild overclock.
Vega 64 water cooled and pushed as far as I can get it
Two pumps.
Lots of fans.

I have the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 650w unopened in a box next to me for the Ryzen build I'm planning. Apart from the power there is one noteworthy difference between the 750w and 650w versions. That is the 750w version has 2x 8/4-pin ATX 12v cables compared to 1 on the 650w. Not that it matters for most people and indeed the MSI B350 Gaming Plus requires just 1.

This thread seems to be going nowhere fast. I'm unsure what wattage PSU to purchase for troubleshooting my setup. I think I will most likely be ok with like 600w + but I have an inkling to get something like 750w+ just in case. There is around a 20% margin if I understand things correctly to compensate for general inefficiency in PSUs ~ this is assuming that the quoted wattage of a PSU is that it can nearly draw from the wall and not what it provides to the components. Of course that would depend on the LOAD on and EFFICIENCY of the PSU so a gold or plat PSU would be a little better perhaps. (?)

I'm still unsure what to get, and from where. Anyone want to help me out and inform people using this thread incase they have a similar predicament?

I would have thought 750W would be more than enough, as others have said.

Bear in mind that all the energy that goes into your PC ultimately ends up as heat in the room it is in, so while while a platinum efficiency might take a little less power from the wall, it might mean that your conventional heating is a little higher, . So I wouldn’t get too hung up about that.

(That is applicable to a domestic user in this country. In the US where air conditioning is usual, then any reduction in heat load is worthwhile - the same is true in the corporate world where the large number of PCs again means that any small saving adds up)

This is really interesting that your SFF 450w PSU managed a 1080 GPU !

PSU rating is what it can provide, not what it takes from the wall - so an inefficient (80% eff) 750W PSU at full chat should take a bit under 950W from the mains. A higher efficiency PSU will have less waste heat, which isn't a huge deal in terms of bills in the UK most of the year (for most people, you just pay a bit more to account for the difference in cost of electricity vs gas), but should run cooler (as it's shedding less heat, for a 350W load going 80% -> 90% means going from 90W heating the PSU to 40W) which would hopefully give benefits in longevity and possibly quietness

Many thanks Xlucine . For whatever reason I had believed That the rating was the power draw from the wall and grid(s). I stand corrected! My flat doesn't need a lot of gas heating most of the year. I guess I may try for a silver or better rated PSU. Maybe 700, perhaps 650w.....

Lucky my sys is really quite ("") stable this would be a whole other palava if it wasn't. I've got a Vega 56 in a box to reinstall I'm currently using a cheap and cheerful PCIE GPU I've borrowed from my brother.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a (to be safe and be futureproof) 750w Tier 1 OEM PSU with 2 motherboard power connectors (8+4 pins ) that should be fine that they p'raps recently purchased that provides good value for the engineering and components involved? As I mentioned ideally from Scan , Amazon or even eBay (new or new other ... lol) though I can probably reuse eBuyer if I need to or somewhere else now I have 1 of my 2 replacement debit cards.

I've decided to get a 750w PSU for a little future proofing. 700w would have been good I think (hope) I just don't see any / many around. I'm not sure if I mentioned my current PSU is an aging 1000w. I don't mind the efficiency rating bronze+ (whatever is allowed onto market?) will be fine. Cost remains a factor.

650W is pefectly fine and even then whether you want 650W or 750W,the Seasonic Focus and Antec HCG ranges(which are the same PSU apparently) are worth considering:

Many thanks. I bought an EVGA Supernova G2 (750w) with damaged packaging from Amazon.

I forgot to check the number and pins of the CPU power connector connections it provides. It's fully modular.

'edit': just read out Hexus review. 2014! Lol. It was like £85+ on release though. Looks like it's 2*8pin cpu power connectors, excellent.

edit2: Looks like Scan Computers updated the guidance they offer in their online Component Catalogue in terms of PSU selection. This wasn't the same a few days ago. I wonder if they read this thread?
