Is my PSU supposed to be loud?

I have an EVGA Supernova G3 550w that I purchased about a year ago when I built my first pc. I always thought that the audible fan sound even when no programs are open is just the normal sounds of a PC. It's audible from 3m away, even with football playing from my TV.

I've read that your PC is supposed to be silent under no load, but this obviously isn't the case for me. I only have SSDs, no regular hard drives. I've tried eco setting on and off.

I saw other people complaining about EVGA G3 PSUs being really loud as well.

It's getting on my nerves recently, especially after learning that this isn't normal. Unfortunately I don't think this would be cause for a refund (purchased from Amazon warehouse over a year ago).

With the current PSU shortage in the UK, any suggestions on what I could do?

Are you sure its the PSU making the noise as sounds very unlikely considering eco mode actually turns the fan off in the PSU

    What PSU shortage?

I've had good results with Amazon warehouse - just call them and sell it as the worst thing ever.
They are more bothered about pleasing you than making a few £££'s - they'll make it back up on your next purchases.

Thanks for the replies. I think it's the PSU making the noise, as I've searched online and found others with the same issue with EVGA PSUs. My GPU is silent with general use. I have a ryzen 5 2600 with an Arctic freezer 34 cooler and I don't think that's the cause either.

Like I said, eco mode turns off the fan in the PSU so if you can still hear it with eco mode turned on then it can't be the psu. But indeed change the psu and see if it makes a difference. It's possible that the psu is faulty and eco mode doesn't work, might have been the reason it was returned to Amazon in the first place

Have you tried to get Amazon to accept the return?

if you system is just ideling then the fan should be stopped, you've not got a silly overclock or the motherboard running some auto all core boost?
use something like hwmonitor to check nothing screwy is going on.

that psu does come with a 7 year warranty from evga, so try contacting them

Re: Is my PSU supposed to be loud?

I know people have been having issues with some Super Flower PSUs going nuts... and I believe that SF have made some of the models sold under other brand names. Might just be a coincidence, though.

Outside of that, I'd generally look to see if it's merely the airflow causing noise. Some cases have odd fan grilles and meshes that don't work so well with certain models of fan/PSU intakes. Other times it's utterly silent, unless you have the case backed against a wall or the side of a shelf/cabinet and the airflow creates a resonance. It can sometimes even interact with the surface the case is sat on, which again is more of a case issue than the fault of the PSU.

Always start by checking the easy stuff and, if necessary, replacing the cheapest parts.

Amazon warehouse are bloody good at refunding. Even over a year they might still do so. Either way the PSU might have had some manufacturer warranty.
